Hi Guys
I love Corsairs and I believe one (f4u-1 )has been purchased in IN, USA to replace the -4 that was purchased and didn't make it to Australia . The -1 was supposed to be in IN . Can anyone please post details of the - 1 for me - I have been searching but to no good purpose ?

In the latest Warbirds Digest there is an FG-1D Corsair listed for sale which just emerged from a lenghthy restoration in June 2005. I don't know if it has since been sold but this might help you. More or less likely this might be the plane you are referring to. Go to www.vintagefighters.com to see some photos of the plane.

Mike

Thanks for the info - I guess this is the aircraft - as you say there aren't a lot of alternatives so it seems to be the candidate - nice aircraft - would suit the possible new owner - very clean

Wait wait wait.....the Raftis dash 4 corsair, the former Max Chapman machine, is now NOT going to Australia? What's the story there? Just read in Classic Wings where it was gonna be based in Wangaratta and was on its way and all...

I cannot click on the link above, but I believe that this FG-1D was a former Salvadoran Air Force Corsair.

If this is the case, the quality of the restoration carried by the guys at Vintage Fighters, is outstanding; I had the privilege of visiting a couple of times, and saw first hand the attention to detail and the high quality of their work.

The FG-1D would have been painted, IIRC, in the markings and colors of Ira Kepford's F4U-1.

Nope - sold on again and we are all guessing what has been bought to replace her - current betting is on this ship - just as good to me but yes made the Classic wings article a little redundant although it is still a nice aiircraft and a nice story - even if it didn't happen!!!

Tulio - thanks to you kind sir for that information !!

We were not informed by Tony R. that the aircraft had been sold on until after the magazine was sent to the printers, hence it will be with some trepidation we will be reporting on the other speculation flying about as to what he has on the way now. We know what it is..but we don't know how long he will be holding on to it!

Dave

Hi Dave

Yes quite right to do so but I guess deals happen and you can't blame somebody for doing good business - I love the new machine - if that is the new one - I agree with you that I hope this one makes it here - something nice to see !!!

Kindest regards
John p

PS it was still a great article and a great edition so feel good about it - you can't help circumstance !

Yes, the -1 that is going to Aus is the one rebuilt by vintage fighters, I know one warbird owner that was very disiponted he missed out on that aircraft.

From what I was told the -4 was sold becouse the owner was offered a amount he could not refuse by the person in Alaska. (the aircraft was bought by a friend of the new owner as a birthday present  ) The -4 will summer in Alaska and winter in Ca.

Also was told the owner in Aus had three corsairs on the way, and one was sold to owner in Alaska. So thier should be one more on the way?

From what I heard the three were all owned by the same owner and were flyable.
1. F4u-4 resold to alaska.
2. F4u-1 from vintage fighters.
3. ? from what digger was saying it is another F4u-4.

Well, then, that re-labelling of my Corsair pic of Raftis' Corsair lasted less than a week.....so now it's on to Alaska, huh? Tolerable...especially if it winters in CA and I have a chance to see it....

OK, as I have a batch of Corsair pics here and am trying to locate the owner(s) and the home base for them, I might as well post them here and see what you guys come up with.....on all of these pics I need a CURRENT owner and the place that they are home based if you happen to know it...current info only please:

Steve Bakke's F4U-5...he still the owner and where is it?

Where does Gary Kohs base his?

What is the name of the guy who now has Pardue's dash 4 and is restoring it and where is he based?

The Fighter Factory's Corsair...where is it based?

Where is Lex Cralley restoring his Brewster example at?

Jim Read's F4U-5....based where?

Ray Hanna took one to New Zealand, the TFC example...based where?

The Birdcage example formerly in New Zealand but now in South America at a museum...the name of the museum?

N100CV, the F4U-5 shown as being at El Toro...still there?

and finally...Mike George's F4U-5....based where?

Any help would be appreciated, am trying to update my photo collection of Corsairs and keep them current....oh, and any one who happens to know who bought the Chapman/Raftis dash 4 in the current issue of Classic wings, that would be nice too...

TFC still have their FG1D, Ray Hanna took the OFMC Corsair to New Zealand.

Thu Nov 10, 2005 7:40 pm

Thought the yellow nosed F4U-1 was the OFMC example and the other , cliped winged one was the TFC example and went to NZ with Ray?
