Dave K T28 Carrier Quals

Wed May 23, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi Wix!

I've been out of it for awhile. Moved a few times different jobs. Ended up being a couple miles from where I grew up. Having a good time, but, being away from the bay area means no super happy fun airplane time for me.

No T28 love in awhile. Best airplane ever!

Just been having a couple of beers and looking at some videos.
I miss hanging with Dan-Mike-Chuck-Ron-Evan-Rob-The other Chuck...

A few years ago I was at an airshow with Dan D and a friend of his came to the plane. It turns out that he qualified on the T28 and he said he had a tape of it. I was excited about it, I had never actually seen any film of a T28 landing on a carrier deck. He said he would bring it by the next time he seen us. Months later at the Salinas airshow Dave K came by and he had the tape. He let me burn it.

Here it is unedited. It had the T28 qual and some S2 quals on it, And a couple of pictures from those times.

Fascinating stuff!

Were the first few passes on the T-28 intentional "touch and go" landings, or was the pilot unable to hook a wire?

Visually, I found it to be a bit disorienting when the pilot is released from the arresting gear and sent off over the bow. You forget he is landing on an angled deck and it looks like he is going to plow off the right side of the deck...and then you realize the deck is angled (as is your perspective).

There was one landing with the S-2 that didn't look very pretty...one wing down, but they still got it to hook a wire. I imagine those training birds took quite a beating.

Thanks for posting those up! I have not had the opportunity to see a video of T-28's trapping before.
