Thats a piece of bittersweet news for me.

My hometown of Vallejo Ca/Mare Island was the first choice for the Iowa. The Navy actually said we could have it. Especially as there was a drydock already there. The Navy wanted us to have it. The People wanted it. But the City Council said no. There was no money in it for them personally, and a Scrap merchant made a better offer. Then went belly up after the Navy changed their minds.

Darn!

Its amazing how soon BB 61 is going to be open to the public seeing how long its been in floating mothballs. The organization which now has possession over the ship must have put in some long hours to get this behemoth of a ship ready for its new home. Kudos to them. :drink3:

I am really glad that so much work has been done by the volunteers! Great work!

I wonder how many of the Volunteers were ex Yard Dogs from Mare Island! It was after all the battle damage repair center for the Pacific Fleet for over 100 years! You can't buy that experiance!

Congrats to LA on giving her a home! Finally a Battleship on the West Coast!
