Actually 'very likely' and well worth a shot - an excellent suggestion. The inter-library loan is Carnegie's internet, and should actually turn up the book if you are prepared to pay a nominal charge and wait a while.

This is what I expected the 58th Fighter Group's P47s to have all looked similar to in April of 1944. The one in this book with the yellow cowling is from the 58th FG, 310th FS from the summer of 1944. Bullington's p47 was in the 311th FS. That is why is think Bullington's plane might have been painted very similarly to this one just with different code on the side and a different color nose or stripe. Wow this is confusing.

O.K. guys the mystery is solved! I just got off the phone with the daughter of the author of the book on the 58th Fighter Group! She heads up the reunion for the 58th. Her father was T.E. Bullington's best friend and tent mate in the war! Her brother Tom is named after Bullington! She is sending me a copy of the book that has a lot on Tom Bullington. She has pictures of the planes in the 311th Fighter group and thinks she has pictures of the "Cowtown Cyclone". I'm stunned. Thankyou Triangle P for the tip! Thank you to all of you that helped try to solve this mystery paint scheme.

Great result. If there's not a profile of the P-47 in question yet, there's certainly several talented individuals on WIX who may be prepared to produce something...
