Warbird Weekend at Heritage Flight Museum - Bellingham, WA

I wasn't sure I was gonna make it up but my friend called me Saturday night to see if i'd like to fly up on Sunday. You bet!

The sky wasn't the best at times but the event was fantastic. Kudos to Heritage Flight Museum for getting both Everett based Spitfires in attendance.

We arrived as the Texan/SNJ/Harvard flight was going up. Always tight formations from these guys.







After a little break the Spitfires and Val Halla were fired up.





















On the flight up and back from Paine Field we did a little formation training with one of the Cascade Warbirds new additions.

It's a Canon T2i with basic 18-55mm and 55-250mm kit lenses. Hoping to add a new 100-400mm soon!

Al, I have those EXACT lenses with my new T3i... I've been working on refining my techniques with it, getting some decent stuff but it's great to know the equipment can really deliver first-class results like this once I figure out how to work all my settings. Your stuff looks FANTASTIC, and the A2A stuff is incredibly crisp... what settings were you using for those pics?

Yes, why yes it was!!! Last year (or was it the year before?) they did so with the Mustang AND SkyRaider at different times throughout the day. Those were more entertaining as they were much much lower and much much faster!!!

There's something about seeing a Spad that low and that fast...
It was hard trying to get much work done on my Studebaker that day!!!

From what I understand the T3i is pretty much the same camera with a swing out viewfinder.

As for the settings I usually use the Tv (shutter priority) setting at 1/320 to get some prop blur and some definite usable shots. Then i'll start dialing it down to try for a bit more blur. If you've done air to air you understand it can be pretty bumpy and there are definitely a lot of throwaway photos. I believe my ISO was 200. I also use a polarizing filter which helps remove glare as well as bump up the saturation.

What it really comes down to is practice, practice, practice. And know that despite the photos you see here there are plenty of lousy ones as well.
