UPDATE:

I'm surfacing again after waaayyy too long. There has been a lot going on at the Cobra Den!

The biggest news is probably that the Yellow Rose has been brought into the Centex Wing as a Wing aircraft, and there is no more Yellow Rose Squadron. It made very little sense to have two unit Staffs, two monthly meetings, and two payments to headquarters. Since almost 90% of the Centex Wing members were also Yellow Rose Squadron members, we decided to make it one big, happy family in San Marcos.

The Rose is performing beautifully. She made the trip to Dayton for the Doolittle Reunion and on the way back, stopped for an airshow appearance at Barksdale AFB. When she got home after more than a week on the road, and a lot of air time, the only thing we could find to do to her was wash her really good. It was a real honor and privilege to make it up there to pay tribute to the heroes of the Tokyo Raid. We've done a local flyover or two since then and she went to a show at Brady. The only squawk we've had was a bad fuel pressure transmitter which has been fixed.

The P-63 finally flew off the hours that the FAA required in the operating limitations so it could leave the vicinity of the San Marcos airport. As a first outing since her return to flight, Pilot Mike Collier took her to the fly-in at Hondo. It was a beautiful day and the 63 was parked next to a P-51 and behind a B-17 and a B-25.

Image

Here you can see Pilot Mike Collier and Plane Captain Kelly Klaus standing proud in front of the bird at her first show in almost 7 years.

Image

She was in good company. There was another P-51 behind her...

We don't have any more dates coming up for the P-63 right now. We want to fly her more and get to know her better. You can be pretty sure that the CAF P-63 will be at the Houston airshow and in Midland for the CAF Airsho.

After flying a bit in the 310 Kate without any weapons slung underneath, pilot Bill Fier began to feel the need. So we found a couple of bombs in our museum, devised a very solid mount for them under the plane, and now the old girl has teeth again!

Image

Image

Another angle... Notice the wheel covers with the Blastards bomb. We still haven't reproduced the torpedo and the last bomb was destroyed in the Arizona cotton field. We like this look much more.

We are working on the P-39, too. We have a new skin on the left flap and are trying to finish up the riveting on it before we re-skin the right flap. New skins for the left wing are being made and we are slowly producing replacement ribs. I may have found a way to speed this up and am working on it now. I would LOVE to have both the P-39 and the P-63 from the Centex Wing make the Midland Airsho!

Elsewhere around the hangar, our U-3 replica is about to complete it's annual inspection. The new body for our Jeep restoration should arrive soon. The frame reinforcement is almost finished and the drive train is being painted. We're waiting for the first restored wheel of our 1913 Republic truck. We'll do the other 3 wheels when we see how this first one comes out. They're not cheap so we wanted to see the finished item before going all in. Buck Willis' Stearman will be leaving soon but I understand that we already have another T-6 coming in and possibly an L-5 with an actual combat history, including service in postwar Japan.

We usually do a lot of flying around July 4th but I don't know what is scheduled right now. Please come out and see us sometime, if you can.

Thanks!

Ray,

Thanks for the update. The P63, and Kate are looging great. I wish I didn't live so far from Texas. For now, my participation in the CAF is vicariously through updates from WIx and helping at Airsho. Such is life.

It has been a long HOT summer in San Marcos, Texas, but we've stayed busy as usual.

The 310 Kate made a six week road trip with the Toras and came home in GREAT shape. We're knocking out a couple of annual inspections of T-6 aircraft. The Yellow Rose was flown hard last week and then got an oil change. We pulled out the Norden bomb sight and are sprucing it up a bit. New ribs and skins for the P-39 are on the way and were are standing by ready to get them on and get the 'Miss Connie' back in the air. The P-63 recently went to a little fly in Fredricksburg and the pilots have been trying to put a little time on her.

The Centex Wing was just approved to "adopt" the BT-13 from the Big Thicket Wing. We plan to pick it up in a couple of weeks and are looking forward to the project. The folks at the BTW did a lot of great work, but it was their only plane and the unit couldn't survive the downtime without it. We're honored to have their restoration team committed to joining us and seeing the plane back in the air.

Our Jeep restoration is coming along nicely and everything is in fresh OD green paint now. The frame is on the wheels again and the drive train is in place. The body should go on soon.

If you can't drop by and see us at the Cobra Den, look for us at Airsho in Midland. We will have the P-63 at Wings Over Houston and I'm not sure what else may go.

Thanks!

Things have really been hopping at the Centex Wing. The Texas heat has let up a bit and there is activity all around the hangar.

We got our parts for the P-39 leading edge from Australia and they are going on now. We were well into the installation of the repairs, previously, when a well meaning volunteer attempted some unauthorized work and destroyed both the wing skins and the ribs. While we were fabricating new ribs on our own, I found a brand new set, and had a set of leading edge skins made, at a company in Australia. I'm having these parts installed by professionals and the plane was moved to their facility, just so there would be no repeat of the earlier foul-up. The Cobra Den crew has finished sheet metal repairs to the landing gear door and the left flap has been re-skinned. We are currently re-skinning the right flap. We ran the engine for a while a couple of weeks ago and drained the oil and coolant. We're getting excited about seeing "Miss Connie" back in the air soon.

The P-63 was flying really well. Then one morning a couple of weeks ago, I came in to the hangar and found a large puddle of coolant under her. We found that the coolant radiators were leaking. Seems the gaskets sealing the top and bottom plates to the core were made of cork and were disintegrating. We removed the radiators and, after thoroughly cleaning the cores, replaced rotten cork with gaskets we made in-house out of really good material. The company that overhauled the radiators, when I called them, said that they didn't use cork anymore for just that reason. The radiators are back in the plane and she should be flying again later this week.

The big news at the Centex Wing lately is our acquisition of a BT-13A. This plane was formerly with the Big Thicket Wing and was undergoing a restoration. The project overwhelmed them, and we've taken on the plane, and some of their members, and will get the plane back in the air. When we went in March to get eyes on the project, I found it looking like this:

Image

The Cobra Den team got really fired up by this challenge and, in three work days, has the fuselage stripped to almost just the frame. We'll finish the dismantling, then clean it, remove the tail section, and strip the frame. After a good inspection of the tubes and welds, it will be primed and painted. Every part will refurbished to as close to new as possible. The fuel tanks in the wing center box will be the biggest task. Here is how the fuselage looked at beer-time yesterday:

Image

So far, the only unserviceable part we've found was the pilot's seat. We have just started hunting one of those. I hope we can remember how to put the plane back together... I'll be starting a BT-13 thread in a few minutes to detail the progress of this project. Any advice, suggestions, and parts source tips would be appreciated.

The Yellow Rose is running and flying great. We have been sprucing up the bomb sight and getting ready for Midland in October.

The other aircraft around the hangar are flying as often as possible. We did new a new plane in yesterday. Mr. Jerry Patterson brought in his OY-1. This beautifully restored plane actually has combat history during the Battle of Okinawa, and saw post-war duty around Nagasaki during the occupation. Somehow, I didn't get a picture before I left yesterday. I'll shoot some Monday and get them posted ASAP.

Come out and see us if you're in the area. Our work activity will slow in late October as our annual Veteran's Day Dinner Dance preparations take priority. It will be held November 10 this year. We're expecting a C-60 to fly in for the weekend and usually have a few other aircraft visiting. More info on that when I post the OY-1 pictures tomorrow.

Thanks for reading!

Here is a shot of the OY-1 that moved in Saturday:

Image

It saw action in April of 1945 in the Battle of Okinawa and was used by our occupation forces in Nagasaki until returning to the US in mid-1946. It is beautifully restored. Hope you can come see it some time!

Thanks!

This OY was restored by Lanny Parcell... It was originally restored in Thai AF markings. Knowing Lanny, I'm sure it's a looker!

Thanks for the updates, Ray. The P-63 looked great at Hondo!

Midland Airsho 2012

The Centex Wing was represented by the Yellow Rose at this year's Airsho in Midland. We had a great trip and the plane performed beautifully. Also attending from the Cobra Den were the CAF P-63F King Cobra and the Tora 310 Kate Torpedo Bomber.

The Rose had fighter cover on the way to Midland.

Image

Flying by on Saturday, Jim Liles was the show F/M and I was on ground (sorry, forgot my telephoto lens).

Image

Pilot Bill Fier had a blast (ugh, sorry, no pun intended) flying the 310 Kate in the Tora show.

Image

I was crew chief on Friday bringing the Rose to Midland. Jim flew the show Saturday and I took Sunday, both the show and the flight back. I got a rare opportunity for a photo on Sunday morning when I arrived to fuel and service the Rose. Took this shot just after sunrise.

Image

Then, while fueling the B-25, I took a moment to get another unusual shot.

Image

During the bomber portion of the show, I got this shot out the window.

Image

The Rose was the third B-25 in the string of three. The "Devil Dog" was B-25 lead followed by "Maid in the Shade", then us. The B-25's were led by the B-17 "Sentimental Journey". In the photo above, you can just make out the B-17 just above the end of the runway. The Maid is banking in front of us above the pond and the Dog can be seen to the right of the Maid below the airport.

On Sunday, the P-63 had a manifold pressure gauge issue that caused Mike Collier to abort his takeoff. We got it cleared up and he made it home with no further problems. The P-63 will be at the Wings over Houston show next. The Rose has several flights coming up but all are local to San Marcos.

Ray,

The last picture is just simply outstanding. It reminds me of B-25's on a stafing run.

Great stuff Ray. Thanks for all your updates. I was just wondering, what ever happened to Centex Wing's website? It seems to have disappeared.

I saw some of the guys at Dallas Executive last weekend. Sounds like at least one of the Cobras will be flying again soon. The Yellow Rose looked good, if the Rose herself did look a little bit like a ghost. Pic later if I remember.

Ryan, I don't mean to steal your thunder, but I did happen to have a photo of the Rose available. It is not the greatest, yours is probably better!

Anyways, here goes
