Warbird Information Exchange

As an olde aeroplane addict, I assume that the various sounds generated by our favorite machinery ring sweet to your ears as they do mine. Certainly hearing the P&Ws, Wrights, Jacobs, Rangers, Merlins, Griffons, Allisons come to life is a major part of the allure of vintage aircraft. Toss in the occasional Daimler-Benz or Sakae (Klimov? Jumo?) and the magic intensifies.

Thanks to the internet, sounds of aircraft now extinct or static are often accessible.

Not sure if such a thread exists at WIX, so I thought I'd "test the waters" to see what interest might exist for collecting engine noise from extinct/static-only types (warbird or otherwise) all in one spot. I'll get it started with a couple I've stumbled across over the years.

One that's a little more obtuse is the Mitsubishi Kasei (of J2M Raidens) at takeoff power. I realize that this might be a soundover, but listening to the entire vid I think it's genuine. See what you think. The Kasei music runs from about 6:56-7:15 in the following link.

Yeah! That Napier @ take off would make you sit up with the shivers if you were laying in your coffin. I found hearing the Japanese versions of 'Off we go..' to be interesting.

What did you think of the sound of the two Raiden launches near the very end? Sounds a bit like a turbo whine, but I think only a couple of J2M prototypes ever mounted them.

In order to cowl tightly and provide sufficient cooling, the J2M had a fan setup between the prop and deeply-mounted engine. I'm guessing the whine is from that cooling unit and necessary prop shaft extension...a curious howl (if it's authentic).


Now who can find that sound byte of the Italian seaplane racer posted within the last year? A banshee if I ever heard one.

Will watch this thread with interest Dan. I think the Sabre recording must be my favourite - what I'd give to see one of those at Flying Legends.

I live near a group of Canadian Halifax bases and have often wondered what a group of heavies climbing out and gaining height must have sounded like from the ground. I bet it would have got the windows rattling for sure. I've been looking for some time but still haven't found a recording of such an event. Also the sound of a 1000 bomber stream passing over would be quite something too.

Seems strange that such impressive sounds were never recorded. Would be great to hear from anyone who can help.

You got good taste DanK, those are two of my favorite sound samples of the near extinct but I hope it ain't so's and I've wondered the same about the Kasei....sure sounds sexy!! I'm also very curious what a Mikulin sounded like.

I've noticed that watching FHC's -109 fly past me the engine has an almost bell like undertone, don't know if it's the induction manifold or the supercharger but there's a sound like someone has just tapped a big bell enough to make it reverberate. The RAIDEN engine has an eerie, almost geared electric motor screech to it too sort of like Fluke Starbuckers Sand speeder.

The hard part about the extinct sounds category is going to be...as we all know, is finding QUALITY recordings. A noble quest DanK!!!! I'd sleep with Queen Elizabeth for fresh Napier Sabre stuff...that's one sick jones...
