Warbird Information Exchange

I saw ion the FAA database that N780AX, restored DO-27 (a warbird in Israeli markings) had a non-injury mishap over the weekend at Jackson, Wyoming.
Anyone know more?

Just curious...it's a neat plane and I hope it can be repaired.

Rob, the Do 27 was widely used in Europe especially by Germany, GAF, GArmy and GNavy, and other Nations. They were used by civilian operators as well, especially as glider tugs and for parachute jumpers. But with prices for AVGAS soaring, their numbers in use are dwindling due to their thirsty Lycomings. I always loved their unique sound, especially the original ones in use by the military. My head always snaps upwards when hearing the distinctive sound, though getting rarer every year. Civilian ones were silenced dramatically due to noise reduction laws over here.

Off topic: Due to noise emission their larger sister Do 28 isn´t allowed in civilian D-IXXX registration. You will find some in use with Hungarian reg., though some of them were refitted with Czech Walter turboprop engines.

I remember many years ago there was one that went up for auction in Chino, possibly a confiscated smuggling aircraft. Maybe around 1990?

Sadly, I'm not in the market for an aircraft in that class, but I'd sure like to see it repaired...

I think I saw this bird at Osh many years ago.

There was a different Do 27 at Osh this year, I guess the only other flying US one if N780AX is correct. In Swiss markings IIRC. I think I got a pic, will post when I finally get around to putting up my full Oshkosh galleries.

Surprised this isn't a more popular warbird. Huge variety of attractive paint schemes for it.

Plus it has the practicality of a nice STOL bushplane.
Rather like the Wilga I saw the Ezells fly in Texas.
