Anyone who's ever served will tell you that there's no way the USAF would allow one of their aircraft

You tell 'em Rick! I served in the USAF and I would have no problem with a temporary repaint of an Air Force aircraft in Navy marking for a movie or other purposes and I guarantee you that most in the Air Force would not have a problem with it, and as you say (thank goodness) it's not their aircraft anyway.

The original was bad enough - Don't know why in the world we need a sequel.

It will probably have vampires in it (not the wooden ones) so they can piggyback on that 'success' also. I'm surprised there has not already been a sequel.

I wasn't refering to (or even thinking of) the Collings F-4, I was talking about the USAF-owned ones that are currently still flying (as seen in my photo below). I would think Hollywood would go to the DoD first for something like that if they wanted one to film...

No, we were talking about the Collings F-4D which has a similar nose to Navy/Marine F-4B's. The Air Force QF-4C/QF-4E and QF-4G models would not work at all because of the very dissimilar nose configurations.

Now if you did an Air Force movie about the war in SE Asia, these Phantoms would be great. They only have maybe 2 to 4 more years before the QF-16 ( ) replaces them, so they better hurry up.

Lookin at the QF-4's got me thinking, why has no one ever touched on Red Flag? I mean not since the 1981 made for TV movie "Red Flag: The Ultimate Game" starring the entire cast of Knots Landing/Falcon Crest Buy hey at the time I was 13 and thought the movie was awesome, all those F-4's and F-5's!!

I really don't care about what most movie goers pick up on (you are definitely right about the F-4 on that one), but I would sure like to see a correct configuration if it is at all possible......

I have limited faith in movie makers when it comes to accurate depictions, but I always have hope!

Actually, not so much. It's getting harder and harder to get DoD cooperation and they have say on what's in the script, as well as the story line.

It may cost them more to work with civilians but you are (mostly ) dealing with rational nongovernmental people without all the govt restrictions. Now if what they want to shoot is ONLY available through govt resources, then they'll bite the bullet.

Amen. Top Gun and Pearl Harbor are tied for worst aviation movies ever made. Both are horrible.

And you know what? If they were to do this right, they could have BOTH.

Redo Final Countdown. Except this time the Nimitz stays and wins. You could even have a scene where Tom jumps up and down on the flight deck after shooting down every Kate in the IJN first and second wave.

The Blu-ray of Top Gun has an excellent 'making of' documentary. I recommend it to anyone who might wonder how and why such historically silly movies get made. It is extraordinarily difficult to make a movie, let alone a good one. There IS a method to the filmmaker's madness, and I'm sure those particular filmmakers were laughing all the way to the bank.

For those of you who think Top Gun is the nadir of aviation movies, I recommend an evening of beer and pretzels and Iron Eagle III.

+1. And I'll bet the sequel to Hot Shots, Part Deux, will hold up better than the sequel to Top Gun.

One of the extras in Hot Shots was a girl I went to high school with. I was completely startled to see her on screen when I saw the movie in the theater. She has one line at the end of the bar brawl "Oh, thanks." as she is getting dusted off.

The funny thing is we're all debating a Top Gun "prequel" that no one in Hollywood (or at least not publicly) is considering producing.

Since we're on that topic, I'd love to see a "Band of Brothers" type of miniseries for "A Dawn Like Thunder". The TBD scenes may be difficult to do (unless they build replicas, which would be uber cool), but there's plenty of Avengers out there for filming!
