By the way, I find the remark "even in a butt-ugly paint scheme..." a little bit on the rough side for the former owner.

Especially when so many guys on aviation forums go bananas, when one dares to criticize a badly painted US warbird, what is unhappily quite common (to say the truth, less these times, it seems there's some gentle trend for accurate finish now on US newly restored aircrafts).

Super Sabre? F-86?

Up here in the land of hockey sticks and full-service lap dances, when we Canucks say "Super Sabre" we're referring to a MkVI Sword with an Orenda 14 - truly the ultimate Sabre. Early in his air force career my dad was a crew chief of Mk V's and VI's and he absolutely loved the airplanes. An F-100 was merely a "Hun".

I don't mean to sound harsh on the owner or whoever painted it on his behalf, and from an historical viewpoint it may very well have a very interesting story to tell. He doesn't have to justify that to me or to anyone else here, but you have to admit as Sabre paint schemes go...

I may be wrong, but I can't remember a current F-86 today flying which is not überchromed or painted in a wrong and uninteresting way.
And it's a pitty, because, like for almost all US aircrafts, there are for the F-86 just tons of amazing authentic finishes possible.

I noticed how proud everyone was of your mid-power Sabre on my recent visit to the Great White North. Nice scheme, but from this end of the globe, our silver one with the RR Avon beats your golden one with the Ordinaria engine.

Just ~ I believe the term is ~ 'funnin ya'.

Asking Price for this Sabre is only $1.2M. Once it's yours, you can paint it any way you wish. : ) If it were mine, I would paint it in Skyblazers colors like the one in Florida.

Not being real familiar with the Avon Sabre, were any of them exported? I remember reading a story years ago by test pilot/racer Skip Holm where he mentioned that while in SE Asia he and his F-4 flight playfully jumped some friendly Sabres and got one h--- of a surprise when the Sabres pretty much turned the tables on them.

Credit where credit is due but...

The CL-13 Sabre 6 and the AVON Sabres were pretty much a match from what I have read and been told first hand.(Even by a couple of Aussies)

The AVON had significantly more thrust, but the redesign meant the AVON Sabre had a ton more weight, the Cannons were a good add though.

AVON slightly faster (not much) and Cannons
CL-13 Sabre 6 Out Climb, out turn and lighter to fly (and not as chubby lol)

Must be time to get them together for a duel....hows Hawaii? Should we negotiate a date?

Interesting question Dan! CAC Sabres were exported to a couple of nations in SE Asia as active fighters. Several were imported to the USA as warbird projects, but none were ever taken on as airworthy projects; though at least one ended up pretending to be a Fury on a stick, IIRC. I think it was (sadly) a case of 'not invented here' with the British engine and significant structural difference.

Skip's experience may well have been with the Ubon-based Sabres, and was actually a formal USAF request for dissimilar practice. It's in the latest Warbird Digest...

So the Ordinaria engine one is less punchy and arguably better at messing around but can't run away?

That would be cool. Currently not going to happen, but there's a good chance of an Avon Sabre in the USA, and that would make that ultimate fly off a possibility...
