Team effort really. I tried a couple of leads, but came up blank. Your Google image find, and then JSF61's observation and link added something to the story. Would like to see more, but happy for someone else to take the lead!

Wow, great info. That why I like this forum! If they had a jet engine inside that fuse, that had to be loud as hell!

Here's a bit on that jet-thrusted fabric covered Wimpey.

And an Avro Lancaster - note the configuration is essentially the same as the B-24s; that's obviously 'how you do it'!

I agree with the earlier remark that the probes in front of the intake on the B-24 are most likely for icing tests.

Kind of makes you wonder just where Boeings inspiration for the 727's center engine came from (LOCOWEED paid Boeing a licence fee to use the 'S' duct design on their overpriced, not up to snuff, DC-10 knockoff). North Americans AJ-2 SAVAGE used two R-2800's and a J-33 buried in the aft fuselage and at altitude could steam along @ 460 kts.

This came in via PM:
The airplane in question on this thread is B-24M 44-41986. It carried an I-16 engine and was used by NACA for icing tests.

Thanks to the PMer!

Man, you said it! This sorta of thing is exactly why I volunteer to pay (a little teensy bit) for it.
