BT-13 Crashes in and around Athens, Alabama

Mon Nov 28, 2005 4:53 pm

I received this message and was wondering if anyone would know anything about this crash? I tried to research it, but found nothing.

I am trying to find info on a training mission during WWII that had many planes crash in Alabama around Courtland, Alabama. There were many that ran out of fuel on a return trip from Tenn in a terrible fog. Many parachuted into the Tenn River around Athens, Alabama and drowned. Pryor Field in Decatur Al was opened by a man named John Smith who is still alive and asked if I could find any reports on incident. Many of the pilots were from the Northeren States because I have bits and pieces of info of people traveling to pick up dead here in North Alabama. Mr Smith was able to get a small number of planes down by breaking into tower and cutting beacon on. I am a history teacher in Athens Al and had an Uncle actually visit a site in 1944 to see one of the crashes. Please help me with whatever info you may be able to get. They were flying
Bt-13 I was told and I thought that perhaps you could be of assistance.

Thanks!
