You know, I believe Yeager paid his dues many times over when he was in WWII and later in the Air Force. But he and his wife both come off as a couple of horses a$$es in that interview. I was not impressed by their comments in that article.

Is it true that Depends sponsored the flight with CY, or is that just a rumor?

Whomever wrote the article seems to be overlooking the fact that Yeager went supersonic many, many, many times after the initial X-1 flight, including at least one other F-15 flight (I think on the 50th anniversary of the X-1 flight) and kept calling it his "second" supersonic flight. Maybe they were referring to the Bell X-1 flight as the "second supersonic flight"?

Never met the man, so I can't comment, other than his comments just sounding like a typical ornery old guy...kind of like that Jeff Dunham character.

I do still have an old version of "Chuck Yeager's Air Combat" game, which is still pretty fun to play 20 years after it came out. "It's a great day for flying".

I've met CY 4 or 5 times and have never thought much of him. Even Bud Anderson stopped talking to him about 6 years ago. Figured by now he was in the rest home searching for his teeth. pop2

When asked what he thought of Baumgartner’s feat, Yeager said that he was not aware of the famed skydiver’s record-breaking freefall. However, he said he was not really impressed.

“Joe Kittinger did that years ago. He’s not doing anything new,” Yeager said.

I guess Chuck is forgetting those that laid the groundwork for some of his flights. Like the ones that got the NF-104 capable of a world record before he screwed it up and ended the program.

Not the first time yeager has denigrated the accomplishments of others. He said the nonstop around the flight of Voyager was no big deal, while he was setting records flying a Piper Cheyenne between cities. Now there is a real accomplishment!

I admire courage more when it springs from a sense of civic duty than when it is the product of hubris.

Well, all I can say is that the man flew combat, hung it out flying X planes and has grown old. I think he has earned the right to speak his mind and be the way he is.

Don't like it? Well, then don't pay him no mind!

Trust me, I am no big CY fan, but, he is who he is. :|

I disagree. I think it is entirely appropriate to publicly shame people for behaving like jerks. I suspect CY was a much more humble man before his celebrity, like many other famous people. One unfortunate side effect of fame is that so many people begin telling the famous person how superior they are that they often begin to believe it themselves, and act accordingly. And old people often become cynical after a lifetime of putting up with other people behaving like jerks. But no one earns the right to be a dick. You do not have an unalienable right to be a dick, no matter what your accomplishments. It is not necessary to be a dick to achieve great things. Many people have changed the world without behaving like one. So I do not excuse it, and I will not ignore it. I'm convinced one reason dickheads come to power is that polite people get tired of arguing with them, so they simply look the other way and let them do whatever they want. (Hitler may have lost the war, but he never lost an argument.)

It's important to call people like that out, because they won't stop until someone does. They may not stop, anyway, but at least you will not have suffered the indignity of enduring their boorishness in silence.

Then again, maybe I'm just getting old myself.

Doesn't he still hold the point to point speed record between Podunk and East Mule Sweat? (and the CHEYENNE was borrowed)

Seems to me, given his personality, it would have been more appropriate for CY to recreate his flight on a Summers Eve.

What an a55hôle.
