This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Most of you probably know this story, but it a classic worth rehashing:

Too incredibly creepy! I just learned of this story yesterday, no kidding! (Are you sure you weren't at the Tri-State Warbird Museum yesterday?

)
Anyway, thanks for posting it, I was only able to get a
very short summary of the "episode", it's great to be able to read about it in detail.

There's a great Gooney Bird book out there by Carrol Glines, Grand Old Lady.
This story iscovered in the book, though not in such detail . Great read, thanks for filling in the blanks.

True ingenuity and spirit of 'get it done' by everyone. I first read the story in an issue of FLYING in the late-ish 50's, today no one would have that initiative and would just sit around trying to make their ipads fix it.

Was it this airplane or another CAAC DC that was straffed and the ground crew and locals pitched in and cut up awnings and glued patches on the beyond numerous bullet holes and on the trip back to base they flew through a rain shower and all the patches blew off. When they got close to the field when they called in the tower told them ' No need for you to call us, we've heard you coming for the last 10 minutes'

I'm reading a great book, "China's Wings," by Gregory Crouch, that tells the story of CNAC. The DC-2 1/2 story is one of many to come out of the airline's colorful history.
