Warbird weekend in upstate SC

There's normally not much happening warbirds wise in South Carolina. But this weekend in Greenville we have the Collings B-24, B-17 and the P-51C at the Greenville downtown ariport. As if that's not enough, the City of Greenville is re-dedicating the F-86 Sabre on the pole in Cleveland park to Major Rudolph Anderson, the only casualty of the Cuban Missile Crisis, whose U-2 was shot down over Cuba. Major Anderson flew F-86s and like all F-86 guys loved them, so the city had one installed years ago on the pole painted in 15th TRS markings. The rededication includes new bronze plaques and new landscaping and the removal of an ugly steel stockade fence. Well worth a visit when in Greenville.

When is the F-86 dedication? I was thinking about heading down Sunday morning to see the Collings birds and might have to stop by the park. I did see the Collings aircraft in Johnson City last week, so I'm not quite sure if I'm going to head down or not...

I believe that the dedication is at 1000am Saturday. I can't go, but I stopped by yesterday. No matter when you go it is worth seeing and paying a call on the monument to a real American Hero. The F-86 is in Cleveland Park and can be reached easily by following the "Swamp Rabbit Trail" signs. If you're up for a walk, park in the park near the Vietnam War memorial and walk "upstream' along the trail and you'll come right to the F-86.
