Is this considered a warbird?

Paul Ryan was here in town last week. He and his entourage showed up on 2 planes. A DC9 (not the one in the OP's pictures) and a 737 with old style engines. The DC9 had the Romney/Ryan emblem painted on the tail. The 737 had red and blue stripes, but no emblem or other identifying logos. Sorry I didn't get any N numbers off them. I was too busy leading his motorcade on a motorcycle.

MAN! It's getting hard to find a 737-200 still operating as a pax hauler in the CONUS, there are several operating as combis in Alaska and Canada, I think even EG&G (SHHHHHH, nothing going on here) has dumped their T-43's for -300's.
The aircraft was operated FOR a Governor not by, as I don't think he's typed in the Super 80, and he never was in the military.

Air Force One is the designation for ANY Air Force aircraft with the President of the United States on board. Most of the time that means one of the two Boeing VC-25A's which are special versions ot the Boeing 747-200B built in the late 80's/early 90's for the Air Force to transport the President.

Aircraft that were formerly used as "Air Force One" type aircraft like the Boeing VC-137's, VC-121 Super Constellation and Constellation, etc. were specifically built and flown as military aircraft and are considered "warbirds."

A civilian aircraft like the DC-9 flown for Governor Romney and his campaign was not and is not a "warbird" because it was not an aircraft built for or ever used by the military services. Because a civilian aircraft was being operated on behalf of a current or former Governor does not give it "warbird" status.

I could see a case for calling it a warbird although I wouldn't do it personally. After Romney got the nomination he was accompanied by the Secret Service and certain DoD personell such as military dog handlers during his travels. So, from a certain point of view, it was used by the military for a very brief period and limited scope.

If the aircraft so designated is used by a president during a time of war, I guess it could be considered a warbird, since the president is the commander in chief of all the armed forces. Depends on how you define warbird. But I could run for president and rent a Cessna 172 for a weekend to fly me to New Orleans to make a speech to the bums hanging out at Jackson Square and it wouldn't make that 172 a warbird any more than this one is. Just because Romney was a governor once upon a time and happened to run for president doesn't make an aircraft he flew on a warbird. Doesn't even make it interesting in my eyes. :lol:

A C-9A/B/VC-9C is a warbird...then is any DC-9-30 series?
A T-43 is a warbird...then is any 737-2xx series?
A C-40A/B/C is a warbird...then is any 737-7xx series?

And worms come out of the can...

An L-17 is a warbird...then is any Navion?

Warbirds are ex-military, not current, nor pretenders.

We aren't here for teenager arguments over grey pointy things in the current military. There's other forums for that.
