A FEW MORE ADDED! - Japanese Wartime Images

Mon Nov 12, 2012 12:37 am

So some of you may know that our museum recently took on some water from that lovely lady Sandy. About 6" to 8" of water. Sadly we weren't prepared and had our archives flooded. Thankfully the bulk of the documents weren't touched, but some were. One being a box FILLED with pictures and references of Japanese aircraft. Apparently they were collected and organized by aircraft type, by a modeler years ago. These documents came to the museum at some point and were never made aware to the newer regime thats now heading up the museum. So sadly they got wet from the storm and are now littered through our conference / meeting room. Let alone all the other documents that were damaged. Trust me, there are ALOT of boxes with soggy bottoms. We are not fortunate right now, but we have learned a very valuable lesson for future situations. Anyways, part of this recovery operation to the archives is to try and scan as many images as possible before any other chance of damage, be it from water, mold, disintegration, etc...

The images below are seemingly from the same set. They all have the same Japanese stamp on the back and appear to be from the same collection. Are these pictures known? Are they common? Any help is appreciated. There are ALOT of photos where this comes from...

Interesting, the shot of the soldiers by the Oscar in the jungle is well known- the aircraft is now with FHC, via NZ and before that Oz.
Keen on seeing more if you get the chance to post-any K-54 Hickory?

In that first pic, the plane looks like it is using a windsock as a drag chute.

Could you please scan the back and post a pic of the stamp?

The Helen in the first picture carried a Japanese delegation to Morotai to surrender the remaining Japanese forces in the Dutch East Indies in September '45.

Thanks for the info! I'll scan the back tonight if I have some time. We have probably another 30 from this set, and countless...... countless others. Stay tuned!

Is the first photo a picture of one of the Betty's that flew in the delegates of the Japanese surrender party?

One thing you could do which I'd suggest would be a Very Good Idea would be to load the scanned images into a Flickr account under the museum's name in sets. That enables easy sharing and comment direct to the image from people who may know about it, and also maintains a strong link between the museum and the images, to the museum's benefit and credit. I suggest Flickr in particular because of who else is there -

For instance there is the RAF Museum's Flickr stream:
http://www.flickr.com/people/royalairforcemuseum/

And the San Diego Air & Space Museum's Flickr stream:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/

And there are numerous others, so you'd be in good museum company, if anyone's paranoid about it being sensible; there are numerous other national level collections there.

It can be regarded as an externally hosted backup (obviously the museum would keep a copy or copies of the digital files stored elsewhere as well) that can be accessed by the general public, scoring free access points in the museum's outreach mandate.

Regards,

James,

I think the flickr account in the CASC's name is a great idea. Won't be tonight but I'll set that up in a day or so. In the meantime I'll continue to throw em' up on my photobucket account. As requested here is the back. Each of these have this same stamp.
