I am excited to see it in its new home. My hat is off to the family that bought it and restored it to its current condition, despite the plane being a total wreck, and despite people telling them it would never be completed. They did a beautiful job. The interior is bone stock. That said it has every little detail in it which makes it much more cramped inside than other B-17's on the air show tours. It would be really tough to give tours safely in it, and being the way the public treats things, not sure you want to do that anyway.

The B-17 was a labor of love for this family. Sometimes when you love something, it means getting it to where it will get the best care, attention, and preservation. And where others will enjoy it as well. We are going through this now as well. This B-17 is going from an unassembled state in a GA hangar to a National Museum where all can see including the final survivors of men that flew them. I also want to say thanks to the National WWII Museum for their hard work.

Sticks pencil in eye and again wishes he had not opened this thread.

But since this is about information exchange, I'll ask that whomever has the source for the FS numbers and shades for this vintage of B-17E as well as the pre-NMF G's please start a new thread, as I would really like to learn more about this, whether it impacts the paint shades on MGS or SSSB or not. Having so many of the "sources" in black & white has puzzled me too and has made me wonder what was correct after seeing so many interpretations on restorations. If someone would add current color photos of what would be considered "the most accurate" OD & grey leaving the factory (forget about sun fading and combat repairs), I'd love to learn more.

To further muddy the waters, using the FS 595A or B systems to describe WWII colors only get you an approximation, as the FS system wasn't developed until well after the war. As has been mentioned, the color we know as Olive Drab varied widely, both in the manufacture of the paint, and the aircraft manufacturer. Even factory fresh B-17s usually show darker vertical fins and outer wing panels, as these were made and prepainted by a subcontractor. And of course the minute the paint was exposed to sunlight and weather the color started shifting. I've always liked this pic of an "overall olive drab" C-47 (I've seen a color version, and it shows even more variation.)
