I read an interview about flying the 109 with a WW2 Luftwaffe pilot, one of the great aces who went on to a career with the West German air force, he mentioned that checking the leading edge slats was an important part of the preflight and if they did not move easily it could be problem if one of them got stuck while maneuvering. I don't think it was disastrous just not ideal.

Good point. It was known, as well, given the slats are airflow actuated, for one slat to open before the other (in turns and the like) and in combat it could be an issue from a gun accuracy point of view of course.
IIRC, they are roller mounted and certainly should move freely and be part of the pre-flight.
