Plus, they had a fighter/bomber that was carrier worthy as well as ground. Corsairs were in reserve squadrons and there was plenty of them. Parts were acssecible too. The f4u-4b with cannons packed a nice punch to ground targets. I know the p-51 was taking tough losses when going after ground targets, making pilots wish they had thier p-47's back. Not sure if there was enough thunderbolts to round out a bunch of squadrons. And as stated before me, they had a few models that kept coming out, f4u-5,f4u-5n, au-1. I think they used the tiger cat in the begining of the war, but very little. again, this is just from reading up on some books so i'm sure i'm wrong on some things here

F4U Folks:

Good Day!

Found this nice pic while browsing the www looking for NP F4Us! 16 F4U USMC corsairs tail code "M" somewhere off the Puerto Rican coast c.1950s. Photo via National Archives.

p.s I wonder how many more of these shots may be within the files of the former Roosevelt Roads NAS folks or National Archives.

Tks for posting/finding all those nice F4U pictures. It's hard to establish a scheme pattern with Corsairs, all kinds of letters, numbers, no markings, odd markings etc.

p.s If you happen to find the F4U-5Ns of the Korean conflict tail code NP (in particular) plz do not hesitate to post'em.

Thank you again!

what are you talking about? With a little research its not that hard to find out what aircraft is in a certain photo. Especially if theres a symbol, paint scheme or tail codes

Thanks for the answer, guys. Frank, how long did we use the Corsair in combat? I'm sure they stayed on hand longer than that, but did it last all the way through Korea?

Yes they did. Until carriers were sent home etc. After Korea corsairs were put in reserve squadrons and ultimately phased out with the sky raider on hand. By 1957, all corsairs for the USA were retired, however other country's used them for several more years.

So they basically used the Corsair until they could Skyraider up I guess. Makes sense, the Corsair was a very able aircraft, and we had em in quantity, unlike the Skyraider.

Yeah basically. Seeing how the corsairs mission was changed to a ground attack aircraft for Korea. Then having the skyraider gave us a bigger plane that could carry a lot more and was more modern. Plus during Korea we had so many ex-corsair pilots from ww 2, it could have been a easy transition for them to fly the same plane that they knew how to fly already. There were tons of pilots who came back to fly the corsair again

yeah, I was aware that much of the Marine Korean contingent (especially early war) were WWII vets.

Wasn't this at one time, headed to the Seattle area for conversion into a Reno racer as part of the "GOTCHA' racing team?
