I wouldn't let water near it either. Stoddard solvent or kerosene with a plastic brush would be best.

Our, minor disassembly, clean as required, paint as needed and reassemble.
Also great for degreasing is dry ice blasting. Doesn't leave media residue and at lower pressures will clean gunk and leave paint/plating intact.

The Aircraft Engine Historical Society has a wealth of information on all kinds of engines. Some of their memebers have or are restoring engines to running condition. Someone their should have good information on restoration and/or preservation of engines. Their website is http://www.enginehistory.org/

Thank you for all the input everyone! I certainly appreciate it, and thank you to those who have messaged me privately about the engine.

Seeing as how the cleaning job is just about done, I'm looking to move into the restoring phase of the project and I will use all your suggestions as they apply. Our museum has a number of engine specialists, but I'm not sure if any have experience with Merlins. Needless to say, I'll be asking around for advice and suggestions from them too. The pictures will show one thing, but I think it really needs a closer inspection to get a true idea of the condition of the engine and all its parts.

m charters, thank you for filling in the blanks for Al Reuben, and thank you as well for the kind words about our museum. We do the best we can with what we've got. Like the story always seems to go, we're gearing up for a major fundraising project to finally have the entire collection under cover. Fingers crossed we can make it happen!

I'll keep you all up to date with what is going on with this engine, and what more I can find out about its history. I've been in touch with the Rolls Royce Heritage Trust, as provided by Baj, but have not heard back from them yet. I can only imagine that the holiday season is keeping everyone quite busy, even British engine fanatics! Again, whatever I find out, I'll publish on here soon after.

Peace,

David M
