Looks like work might be sending me to Reno in a couple of days. Too bad I missed out on race season.

Are there any warbirds based around the area that I could possibly get a peek at?

Hey Rob,

If you take a short drive from Reno out to Stead Airport (site of the air races) you might come across a warbird or two on the ramp or inside a hanger. Several years back I stopped by to check it out and came across the F8F Bearcat racer "Rare Bear" sitting outside. Also on the ramp were a couple of P2-V Neptunes and some MiG 17's. If you ask someone at the airport they might be able to direct you to someone at one of the manned hangers that might enjoy showing you their aircraft.

I can't remember if any aircraft on display at NAS Fallon are visiable to the public, I think they are far passed the main gate. But I know they have an A-6E, F-14A, A-7 and A-4. I'm sure they added a few more over the years.

Rob,

Rent a car, drive like a bat out of hell and you can come visit Wendover! If you ask and I let them know in advance you can see two Canadair T-33s, a T-28B, MIG-15 and a couple of Provosts. The T-33 owner has been know to give rides for the cost of fuel :D

The Martin Baker MB.5 replica project is at Stead in one of the hangar rows.

Rob,

If ever at Lovelock, to the east, you might want to ask about a buried Hellcat. An old crusty airport manager (?) there told me in 1993 that he knew right where it was. The desert soil there is VERY high alkaline though, so I doubt if there is such an animal that it would be much good for anything. He wouldn't tell me a whole lot at the time.

Rob as mentioned above, the two trips I'd make would be to Stead Field north of Reno, and a drive to Carson on 395; takes a bit over half an hour, but there are a dozen HU-16 Albatross' on the ramp, and the airport also is home to a bunch of other warbirds, if the owners are around. Shadetree Aviation is also on the North side of the field, usually with at least one new built Yak-9 and a few other interesting European oddities. There are T-28's, L-39's, T-34's, a AT-37 Tweet along with a complete collection of the four Grumman Seaplane types there.

15 minutes further south is Minden Airport (also on 395) and Minden Air may have their Neptunes back on base now. It's a hit and miss airport for warbirds to view.

Also at Cannon International at the Reserve base, theres an RF-101B Voodoo and RF-4C out front

Also at Stead there is a CH-54 Skycrane on static display at the NV NG site.

Anybody remember when Harrah's had a restored Ford Tri-motor on display...and an F-5 (the prop not the jet) at the auto museum?

Excellent info guys :) Hoping to get word on the trip in the next day or two. Would love to get the chance to go traipsing around that part of the country on a photo mission. 8)
