A nice 1960s early 1964 photo i understand of flight ramp scene with what is 23rd TFW? shark mouthed F-105D Thunderchieifs running up their J-75 engines.

I used to see that all the time when I worked on Thuds. It's called a "cart start", short for cartridge start. The slow burning powder gave enough of a push to get the J-75 turning over, but made a ton of smoke in the process. the cartridge fit into the same plumbing as the hose from a -60 power cart. On a still day, the smoke just hung around until the guys taxied out and blew it away.

Very cool! I remember that photo from a 1960's national Geographic Magazine.
