Warbird Information Exchange

Our museum is in the process of recreating our website.

The back side it done and we are now looking at the look and feel.

I've looked at dozens of aviation museum websites which has led me to some opinions, but I would like to get a broader perspective.

Which Aviation Museum websites do you think are best?

Have to agree with Dave on this one. Tons of content, always up to date and beautiful to look at.

All of us here on WIX are warbird junkies, if we cannot get to a museum we get to their website. I have found websites that give a generic description of the aircraft ,but nothing of that particular aircraft,its life after the factory shipped it out. Many don't list it's serial number or why it's painted the way it is. I know it takes time to do that but once it's done ,it's done forever or until the plane is removed from the museum. Vintage Wings of Canada is a good site.

I agree that VWoC's website is one of (if not) the best in the biz. But im sure they paid dearly for it. One critique I'd make is the aircraft collection page. I'd like to see more organization. More clarity. Meaning you'd see sub-category's on trainers, fighters, bombers/liason, etc. I'm not one for just a gallery page with all the aircraft randomly listed. My. 02 cents.

Chicks Dig Warbirds.......right?

This Israeli Air Force Museum has a great website. Lots of content and a very eclectic collection, from various surplus aircraft, to the 1st and 2nd generation French jets (Ouragan, Mystere, Super Mystere, Mirage) to the American era (Skyhawks, Phantoms, etc.) They even have a restored TBM that was originally brought over as a crop sprayer in U.S. Navy colors. There is second TBM in Israel that is being restored to airworthy.

Is it possiblt to have a website that is "too good"? If there is so much information and pictures, would there be incentive for people to actually want to come through your doors and see things in person? Just a thought.

I like VWoC's content but I don't find it very iPad friendly. These days you have to reckon that many people are surfing from mobile devices, especially if you're a museum (travel destination).

One of the things they do best is tell you when and where their planes are scheduled to fly. I find it incredible that so many flying museums don't do that at all.

I must say, I haven't seen their website before, but I took a look at it and you guys are right, it is well made.

Definitely agree. I can find out what a P-51 Mustang is by going to Wikipedia, but I can't find out all that much about a specific airframe.

One thing I've noticed with many of the Warbird websites is the lack of maintenance photos. They have plenty of photos of the airplanes flying and on the ground, but lack what it takes to keep them in flying condition. Not that we're the best, but we do have a well rounded website that will satisfy both the flying and maintaining fans!
