RAAF Sabres, Winjeels, Vampires, Caribou and more

Fri Mar 08, 2013 9:51 pm

Anyone who is interested in RAAF and Australian Aero Club history from the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's will enjoy the podcast series I have been recording with Noel Kruse, a kiwi here in Cambridge who grew up across the ditch and flew in the RAAF. He trained on Chipmunks, Winjeels and Vampires and flew operationally on Sabres - including in the Indonesian Confrontation war - and then Caribou and Hercules. He started his own aerobatic flying school in Sydney after his RAAF service and continues to teach aerobatics now from Hamilton Airport, here in the Waikato. Noel is a superb storyteller and I have really enjoyed recording these stories. We have a lot more yet to record but the first four episodes are online here, for free to download to your MP3 player or listen directly from your computer here from the Wings Over New Zealand Show pages:

If anyone here has been listening to these shows, here is part five

And just uploaded today is Part 6 which should appeal more to the US audience as Noel recalls his days flying Sabres from Ubon, in Thailand, alongside USAF Phantom squadrons, including one led by the famous USAF pilot Robin Olds.

These Sabres became the first Agressor Squadron used by the USAF. This episode can be heard here:

Interesting how the RAAF Sabres did against the F102 and F4. Some funny stories too!
