P-47 and Mosquito Parts

Sun Apr 07, 2013 10:28 am

I was at Shoreham Aerojumble this weekend and picked up some parts that were from a mixed bag of P-47 and Mosquito parts.

I would appreciate if any one can confirm where these parts are from on the aircraft.

Part 1 - looks like a Dark Earth/Dark Green wing tailing edge section with no part numbers but some scratching on the inside.

Part 2 - looks like a republic stamped twin skinned panel - with a cast adjuster remaining at one side.

Part 3 - a DHP stamped section painted silver and green - all parts have stamps with w3 22XX and DHP.

Part 4 remains of an unknown alloy casting

Thanks for any suggestions

6th image from the top looks like a flap track to me. I'm not sure about type though.
Sorry I could not be of more help :(

That is actually the intercooler door from the side of a Thunderbolt. There should be a matching track on the other end of the door.

Well spotted,
Thanks Brandon. It looks like the rollers for the leading edge, and those for the trailing edge travel different paths. The trailing edge changes direction at the end of its' travel, in this case opening the intercooler door.

I enjoyed the series that Jeff Ethell did. Walking around and flying various WWII aircraft. He had a way of making you feel like you were along for the ride.

I made a baggage door out of one of those in a previous life, and fixed the other one in place. Might still be on what later became "No Guts, No Glory" wherever that got off to.

Thank you Gentlemen. It is much appreciated.

The Mosquito parts are confirmed as being DH Hornet parts.

Oh well..

Hornet parts are rarer though!

There is a DH Hornet project in the UK and they have asked for it. Which seems the right place for it to be.

Part 1 is I now believe from an Auster AOP 9. The piece at the rear of the wing on the starboard side - a fillet between the glazing and the wing. This also explains the dark earth paint and the anodising on the bolt head.

The markings on the inside were B5- 14- 240. The inspectors stamp was AUS. The AOP 9 was the Auster B5 Project number.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

If the DH Hornet folks have a website, please post the URL!

David Collins has been doing some very impressive work. Hornet parts going in his direction are a good thing.
He is a regular poster on Key forum. He's a supporter of all of the folks that are trying to resurrect extinct types by collecting fragments and building from scratch.

Some of the projects are Stirling, Halifax and Whitley and I'm sure I've missed some just off the top of my (pointy) head :D

The part shown in the third picture - DSC0018 has been cleaned to show a part number 5402874.

There are two inspector stamps 49G in a circle.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

Click on the part that says "surviving hornet parts", scroll about half way down. I know what you might be thinking, but don't get too excited. It's only a partial, and it's really rough.
I really admire Davids' tenacity. Assembling impossible to find tidbits into such an impressive representation. The hornet is such a beautiful machine. There is a well known photo showing a pilot doing aerobatics with both engines feathered

Yes, I saw the photos. The cockpit section they built looks nice.
