The first group of USAAF pilots do not appear to be in P-47s, rather P-51s with Malcolm hood canopy. The pilot at upper right looks an awful lot like Bud Anderson of the 357th FG.

The first photo appears to be Scott Crossfield in a David Clark X-15 pilots suit.

the 'Navy or Marine pilot' is John Glenn who indeed was a Marine (and did a few other semi important aviation related things over the years before becoming a Senator).

The pinking out EKTACHROME photo is 1950's actor Troy Donahue who was in a turkey movie with Dana Andrews and Efram Zimbalist Jr. dealing with a mid air between a T-2V and a DC-6.
The ironic part is years later, Zimbalist was the co-pilot of the 747 in 'AIRPORT 39' (or was that ROCKY 5....thousand?) who gets blown out of the airplane when Dana Andrews' BEECH B-50 collides with the 747.

Definitely Bud Anderson and the rest are also 357th FG Pilots.

Shamelessly stolen from me and put on his page. I don't mind sharing
but it's nice to be asked and receive credit for the effort involved. I have
a couple people I watch on facebook and the record is 2 minutes flat from
me uploading a photo to it being on flickr with a tag that says copywright
protected!
Why is it so hard to #1 ask #2 thank #3 credit?? A frigg'in mystery to me!

I love those classic WWII shots of the fighter pilots sitting in the cockpit.

Jack-
That, to a certain extent, has made me lots less likely to share scans of photos that I have in my collection. Almost everything I've posted on WIX turns up on someone else's site or flikr account with the "copyright joe schmo 2013" claim. Sitting here holding the 75+ year old negative in my hand, I'm thinking "not likely..."

Oh well.

The good and the bad of the internet age...

And that sucks Kevin for those of us who try to do the right thing when posting photos on WIX. I've posted hundreds of my own photos and thousands that I either have been given permission by the owners (of where I have no idea where they acquired their photos and never asked) or at the very least try to give proper credit if and when I can. I've been down this road a few times here on WIX and it's a shame to not want to post photos for fear of other not so honest people stealing them and/or claiming them as their own. I've said it before many times that I have zero interest in claiming photos that do not belong to me. Why would I? I get nothing out of it. I post photos for the enjoyment of ALL of us who appreciate seeing these looks into the past. I'm not sure why some of you do not watermark your photos, and that is your business I guess, but I feel for you if you are putting time, effort and money into your collections just to see them show up on someone else's website with the claims they own them. That behavior ruins it for those of us who try to follow the rules and respect other peoples property.

It's always been my policy that if I ever post a photo that belongs to someone that I had no idea it belonged to, just simply PM me, call me, text me, e-mail me or contact the management if you have a problem ... and the problem WILL be solved. You can count on that.

All that said it's a real shame to not want to share your photos with those of us who enjoy and appreciate them. I guess I understand your side though, but it's still a shame. I guess I should number the days until I stop posting photos as well.

It's still very much a wild, wild west show out there in cyberspace. :?

Mark-
It's not that I don't want to share. But I've (like many people) invested literally thousands of dollars to obtain original negatives and prints, photo albums, brochures, etc that document a few very specific moments in time in the areas in which I am interested. I have posted several of those, and usually post particular photos if someone asks a very specific question that I can answer. The photos aren't works of my own creation- I consider myself to be their custodian. But it is frustrating when you have an original photo obtained from a vet that appears in the London newspapers with no credit, or when you provide photos to an international magazine upon request and then see them run without a note of thanks. Or see your photos screaming around the internet, being passed from one person to the other, with no acknowledgement.

Photos can teach us a lot, and your numerous topical posts have sparked lots of great conversation here on WIX. And I'm very appreciative of your investment and of your time. I have just been burned several times, and it hacks me off. Probably wrongly so, and eventually I will get over myself. But when you spend tons of hours researching a topic, find a nugget buried in someone's closet, get excited because it answers some previously unanswerable question, and then share it- only to have others take the credit- it is very frustrating.

I'll try to get over myself sooner. Besides, as far as the topics that most folks on WIX are concerned about go, I am but a mere novice. Many folks have better collections than mine. I just have good ones in a couple of very particular areas.

Thx Kevin, and as I have said before it's always my pleasure to post anything I can that is interesting to you folks who appreciate it. I get a kick out of it and I hope others do too. It's just a fun hobby for me. Hang in there and know you have understanding and support from many of us here on WIX. Your frustration is well warranted and justified.

And as for the reason this whole conversation is taking place, Mr. Liberator just do the right thing and ask Jack if it's OK to have his photos on your website. He's a great guy (who is always missed here :( ) and I'm quite certain he will give you his permission.

Mark

Not to start a fight, but how are those well known photos Jacks? I've seen them credited to USAF etc. I'd imagine they're all National Archives images of the 357th. I've seen lots of photos posted that people claim as theirs but are well known images seen and credited to many people, basically depending on if they have a copy in their collection. Those kids of pilot photos were taken by every fighter group. I have a number of similar looks from the 479th FG and the 404th FG. But just because I have a copy that is a wartime printing that came out of someone's scrap book, doesn't mean there aren't hundreds of those floating around as they were taken by Army photographers working for the unit at the time and generally passed around to anyone who wanted a copy.

Not picking on Jack, just pointing out how hard it is to claim some of these images as ones own.

BTW the pilots in a circle identified as Navy pilots are in fact pilots from the 354th FG. I saw that image first in Richard Turner's book "Big Friend, Little Friend." He identifies all the pilots involved, including himself and that it was taken at Maidstone, England. So those are Mustang jockeys.
