My uncle, Wilbur "Bud" Lauer was killed on a mission to Berlin. I never knew him, but I've heard from all his brothers and sisters over the years talk about him. He was so proud to serve and also thrilled that he "got" a B-17 instead of the "crate the fort came in". Several years ago I built a replica of his plane as a tribute to him and his ultimate sacrifice. Our family has located the crash site in Germany, and it's on the bucket list. Anyway, just wanted to share this.

Chris, I looked it up, & my father LT. Charles F. Stuart JR. with the 381st Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter Group 9th AAF flew an escort mission to Berlin that day in his P-51.
We will never again know the "like's of men" as that generation.

Thanks for your kind responses. Back in the mid 90's I spoke to a gentleman who was shot down the same day on the same mission. He was fighter escort and he told me they never located the group(s) they were assigned to meet up with because the weather was bad. Turns out a man in Holland had dug up what was left of this guy's Pratt motor and was going to ship him the front row of cylinders!

Sorry for your loss, maybe in that trip you can go to the airfield where he was based out of. My uncle is in a similar situation, but I have to go to Saipan to see his base and Japan for the crash site. If you have photos, I'm sure all of us here would love to see them.
