I know there's some real sharp folks here on WIX who really know their stuff regarding old warbirds (at least I think I heard or read that somewhere )
These photos are a part of the SDASM archives C.M Daniels Collection and have very little information to go on, but seem to show some interesting history.

It wouldn't be difficult to tract down the basic what's, when's and where's etc. of many of these guys, but I always get a kick out of some of the inside details and stories some of you have stored in the ole memory banks. So here's a bunch of random pics. Some are quite easy to figure out with or without the info I posted. But again many of you guys have some really outstanding personal info and stories so feel free to post if you like.

Zero Surprise!!...

Wow, I never knew that Wildcats served as crop dusters/sprayers. (yellow Wildcats with the large tanks on the wings and crop duster impellor on the belly). Would like to hear if anyone has any info on the Bearcat with the large underwing tanks. Have never seen these large post war tanks on the wings of Grumman aircraft. Thanks for sharing.

I believe that was at one of the long range air races they had in the late 60s or early 70s. They were something like 1000 kilometers or 1000 miles long. So the more fuel you could haul the fewer pit stops you made.

The other thought that came to mind was that airshows back in the day would give you a fill up when you were there. If you had the drop tanks you came home with extra free gas when you could tanker. Drain the tanks into drums and then use it later.

The picture of Walt Olrich's Miss Priss with the underwing tanks is for the 1968 Harold's Club Race as part of the Reno Air Races. I think it was Milwaukee to Reno that year.

The only Bearcat that raced in a pylon race with the tanks was Lyle Shelton's Phoenix I at the 1971 U.S. Cup at Brown Field, which was 1000 miles. He qualified without the tanks, but during the race flew with (what I believe were) A-4 Skyhawk tanks under the wings....and it was very nearly disastrous as in it had a severe aft cg condition for a majority of the race and making pylon turns at speed with those tanks nothing short of a testament to 'the man' himself. He finished fourth in that race. Ironically, it was the same race that Mike Geren was killed in when N5005 (the photo below Miss Priss) had a massive engine fire and instead of getting out of it, Mike tried to save the plane--even as the firewall was burning through--and cartwheeled it in a flaming ball on base leg.

In the F6F photo titled "Brown Field '86-'87", could the Corsair in the background be "Blue Max"? I can't tell for sure if the aircraft pictured is a -7, but it looks like it. If that photo is '87, that's the year of the accident:

Second photo from the top of P-40N. In the back ground is a P-51H or P-82? If the photo is taken at NMUSAF must be P-82. Second prop in front or prop of aircraft further back.
Ideas?

Hi Guys, This thread is a bit dated but I just have to add this
Regarding the HA112 photo from Reno 1981- boy do I remember it. Funny, how after all these years I still remember it.
It was flown by a pilot named "Bubba Beal(e)" and flew a demonstration "duet" with a spitfire on Saturday afternoon, very cool to see these 2 flying together, shades of battle of Britain. I still remember the unique engine sounds of the HA112.
There was a strong crosswind blowing from the south that day and unfortunately the 112 GROUND LOOPED upon landing and was severely damaged. I don't think the pilot was injured. They were landing East to West on the main runway. It happened just beyond the RENO pylon.

Reno 1981 was an awesome year - !

To the best of my knowledge the P-51D "Shangri-La" pictured in 1945 was used stateside for Don Gentile's War Bond tour and never went overseas. I'd be very surprised if this picture was taken in Paris, France.
