How about some interesting 'locations' as opposed to 'formations' from an older thread. Old airplane photos never get old, they just age well. Lots of good stuff here from a variety of interesting locations. Add your own commentary as some could certainly use some explanation other than just their location. Some you've seen posted before. the jug, spit and hawker tempest are may be in a hangar at Villacoublay, South of paris.

the arado floatplane looks like a japanese floatplane .

An absolutely great set of photos Mark! I love the legs in photo number 2 however in keeping with the theme I thought for sure there would be an airplane in the photo!

Thanks for this one, Mark - it may help solve a riddle. The John Ford documentaries December 7th and The Battle of Midway both have a shot of a B-18, missing the engines and nose turret:



I bet when the sequence was shot in Hawaii, they scraped up some of the wrecked and damaged aircraft, set them on fire and filmed them. The scene also shows this burnt-out biplane:


I've been trying to ID it for a long time and I think I've got it - a Douglas BT-2B trainer (image from aerofiles.com):

The wrecked hangar was at a former Luftwaffe base usually described as being between Versailles and Chateaufort. Toussus le Noble fits this location better than Villacoublay so I'd be interested to know if you can confirm Villacoublay.

The wrecks of Allied fighters there were having spares recovered to keep captured types flying. There is another photo which shows the Typhoon (not a Tempest) JP845 SA-H (486 sqn) along with at least 3 more of the type. The Spit hiding behind the P-47 is believed to be EN626 DL-H (91 Sqn); there was at least one more P-47 and 3 more Spits.
