WWII Black Patch with White Skull? Lackland,Mystery?

After seeing the PBS "Ghost Army" last knight, I thought about the time my mother told us that when she was hired help at Lackland airfield during WWII, she was startled to see an "airman" ( as she said it ) with a Black Patch with a White Skull on it on his right sleve! Any Historians out there know anything about this patch? (Basement jokes are welcomed!

Watched that last night, if you missed it on PBS, check your XFINITY or ON DEMAND. It's about the 23rd Special Ops outfit in Europe, the rubber tank guys, worth a 55 minute investment of your time.
