C-124 Topic

Hi,

As long as we seem to have a thread or two about the C-124...does anyone know what happened to the one in Vegas at McCarran International ? I know I saw one there some time ago...I forget just how many years <grin>.

They scrapped it just a couple of years ago.
I don't know if anything was salvaged off of it.
I guess it was in the way of "progress"....

Someone was elling gauges from it on eBay a couple of years ago.
I never saw anthing really neat (wheels, seats or anything identifiable) or i would have bid on something.

What I really want is a nose radome....

How many C-124s still exist? Are all survivors pretty much doing duty as static display aircraft...or are there any rotting away somewhere in need of attention...or both? :roll:

I remember 52-0994 sitting in a field behind Willow Run. I also remember being deathly afraid of that giant hulk that seemed to rise out of the trees (of course, I was only 5 or 6 at the time.)

Until someone proves other wise, I refuse to believe that something that ugly actually flew. Any pictures of those craft in flight are obvious forgeries on par with the moon landings.

The one at Hill has been restored and repainted - I've never seen the interior but several folks have told me the cockpit is nicely restored as well - Alas due to rules and regs only the privileged few will ever see it.

chico, UGLY!??? The c-124 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever!.

I refuse to call an airplane that gave me nightmares as a kid anything other than ugly.

And if anyone has the number of a shrink that can explain why cargo aircraft would give a 6 year old nightmares (I remember having a "not a happy camper" moment when I was taken inside a C-5 that paid a visit to one of the old wayne county shows), I'd appriciate the number.
