As promised, I took some photos of the replica warbirds at the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant next to Palwaukee Airport in Wheeling, IL on the only sunny day we had during the holidays...

I also went to the site of NAS Glenview; the Hangar One building and its control tower have been incorporated into a shopping center...

Image

and the Von Maur store to the right of Hangar One has this Stearman on display...

...which, oddly, is marked as an N3N! The fellow in the last picture is an animatronic figure - stick a quarter in the box and he'll come to life and tell you about the history of NAS Glenview!

The Collings Bombers visit their every year. There was a website with a picture of the B-24 when it was the 'Dragon' and in the background you could see the P-38. Here is the main page of the site http://www.hypercontinuum.com/hypercont ... Planes.htm

Then here is the page with the picture on it http://www.hypercontinuum.com/hypercont ... istGun.jpg

Still may be some buried planes around NAS Glenview! They buried some of the foreign evaluation aircraft there as I recall (J8M?). Also the Vulcan crashed a little bit north of there next to the railroad tracks.

That was XL390 which crashed in August 1978. I didn't witness the accident (it was about two miles northeast of my house), but my mother and I heard about it on the radio and we drove past the site a couple hours after it happened. The plane hit between the railroad tracks and a landfill site just north of the runway, and all that was visible from the road was a large smoldering scar. Some news photos showed pieces of the engines and landing gear. I think the Vulcan was in town for the Armed Forces Day airshow.

No, I haven't eaten there (it was early afternoon when I shot the photos and they were closed), but my parents have - my dad said it was good the first time and average the second time. Nice view of the runway. They had WWI replicas there before; the landing gear from one of them was sitting behind the kitchen.

Restaurant is owned by Specialty Restaurants, i.e. David Tallichet. Every time I have been there it has been very good.

Vulcan was flying out of Glenview for the Chicago Waterfront Festival. I was on the road and saw it flying low, disappear behind some trees, and erupt into a fiery mushroom cloud. Very sad occurrence. You could see the wreckage and scarring passing by on the train as well.

Anyone ever see the crash report?
