...The Ohio State Highway Patrol? Are they really the right agency to be releasing an official report? The article states that the NTSB will still be issuing a report on the accident, so I guess this seems odd to me. I'm sure there are folks here who are better informed, than I am, so maybe this is standard.

It's probably standard for OHIO. Probably a state law that says they have to do a re[port on all motor vehicle crashes. They probably had input from the state aeronautics dept.

When I was in the military, out unit safety rep had to do a report for off duty accidents, basically the same thing.

Weird report. Uh , yeah the left wing and the rest of the airplane "touched the ground" when it crashed into it.

Will it be an end to wing walking? I've enjoyed watching it at airshows, but I'm not sure if people should risk it anymore.....

I'll also wait for the NTSB report. This one does not mention the smoke that came from the exhaust just prior to what appeared to be a loss of speed then inverted stall.

QUESTION.....

Everything I've read says she didn't use a "safety line"...

Does anyone know for sure?

I have photos I took of her at Sun N Fun that looks like she was wearing a line standing on the top wing and also when she was sitting on the bottom wing...... I'm pretty sure she didn't have one when she was moving across the wing...

Thoughts?

It's quite normal for Police to prepare a preliminary report for the coroner on fatal accidents who will then look at all details including the NTSB finding.

In the general media reports after the crash, that's what was reported.
I though all the modern "wing walkers" used them.

As far as an end to wing walking, there was a father-daughter duo in the 90s that had a act, they were both killed when their Stearman crashed at low level. So we have at least two fatalities of wing walkers who died not while doing what we think is dangerous, but because of an aircraft crash.

IIRC, was there another walker killed a couple of years ago? I seem to recall someone being killed during an inverted pass...

I believe that it means she wasn't actually tethered to the airplane by a line. There were some straps for her to hang on to, but other than the force of her grip and gravity, there was nothing else keeping her attached to the airplane.

I was under the impression that Jane Wicker had a tether of some kind after she got to where she was going on the aircraft.

The father/daughter crash was ruled a medical event with the father

The wingwalker death a couple of years ago was the helicopter-stearman transfer with John Mohr

The inverted pass fatality you're thinking of is probably the Joe Hughes incident at Reno in the 70's

She definitely used safety straps in some circumstances. I think the "I don't use a safety line" comes from her not having one that goes from cockpit to wing strut that she is tied to at all times. She did strap in on the top of the wing and at other times as well.

I hope nobody has an aneurism but this is a link to a picture from the New York Daily News just prior to the wreck. Its not a gory picture at all but you might not want to look if you are of a delicate nature. You can see she is wearing a harness and is holding the carabineer in her hand.

There are other pictures that show it better on google but some of them get gory and even though it doesn't bother me I don't want the more timid types getting worked up.

What I find disturbing about that photo is the position of the elevator. Something was definitely not right with the situation.
