Post War star and bar for T-6

Hi, we're modifying our star and bar on our T-6 to be the post-war type with the red stripe through the bar. Does anyone have details of the correct dimensions to this please, and is there a specified shade of red?

If the wartime star-and-bars on your bird are drawn correctly, the red stripe will occupy the middle one-third of the bars.

I am not a math major, but if the surround is 1/8 radius.....top and bottom, and the center stripes are 1/6 x 3 , doesn't that add up to 6/8...................where is the other 1/4?

They don't need to add up.

All of the dimensions are based on the diameter/radius of the base circle.
The borders, bars, and stripes are all added OUTSIDE of the base circle. This is why the bars look 'inset' when the insignia is done with a blue border. The construction is much easier to see in the 1943 red bordered version

There's no other 1/4. The widths are expressed as fractions of the radius of the inner circle formed by the points of the star, not as fractions of the bar height. So the bars in total including the blue surround have a height equal to 3/4 of that radius. All dimensions of the star 'n bar key off that inner radius even though ironically it became all but invisible when the surround changed to blue. Even the sizes of the insignia were quoted in these terms, e.g. an insignia was said to be of 30" "nominal" diameter when built around an inner circle that size even though neither the length nor width of the complete insignis was 30".

Maybe that is why I had so much trouble laying out the blue surround star and bar on our C-47...............too much thinking, not enough painting!

Maybe the US services should go back to the prewar star-and-dot. Less likely to promote alcoholism. Although restorers still manage to get it wrong, usually by making the dot too big.

If you really want to be driven to drink, try getting the 1950s RCAF roundel right. It's a good thing Canadians have better beer.
