May I please take this opportunity to advise my US friends that Volume II of the 'Spitfire Survivors' book is now available on line.

Fantastic pics.....thanks for posting.

Do you know what the significance is of the B-17 with one engine cowling leading edge in a checkerboard-type pattern?

Wiki says:-

The Sally B was used in the film Memphis Belle as one of 5 flying B-17s needed for various film scenes, and it was used to replicate the real Memphis Belle in one scene. Half of the aircraft is still in the Memphis Belle livery,[1] following restoration of the Sally B nose art and the black and white checkerboard pattern on the cowling of the starboard inner (no 3) engine, carried as a tribute to Elly Sallingboe's companion Ted White, whose Harvard aircraft had the same pattern on its cowling. Sally B was reworked to B-17F configuration for filming.[2]

Thanks for the info on the cowling. I was speculating it may have had something to do with ice/glaze detection at altitude. Seen a lot of that flying helos in cold weather.

Thanks indeed. Lovely work.
Did someone forget to water the grass?
It looks a little more brownish than days of yore.

So that means there are actually 1-1/2 "movie Memphis Belles" out there? :?

Fantastic photos BTW. They look just like models!

WOW!
Thanks Peter. Those are some amazing shots, thanks for posting. There is always some very special things to be seen at Legends. Two gladiators! When is the last time that was seen? Roman times?

Andy Scott

P.S. I will order book 1 and 2. Does shipping them together make any difference in cost? The shipping from England to N. America is expensive, but it sure is fast.

Can someone please remind me which is the earlier camo scheme on those spits...the olive drab and gray, or the olive drab and earth? I could look it up, but not only am I forgetful, I'm also lazy and would rather enjoy the conversation.

Thanks a bunch! :spit

PS...I know each of those colors actually has an official name of some sort, but my brain hurts trying to remember all that, and then I need mass quantities of beer to soothe it. :partyman:

Don, it was a hot two days. Way hotter than last year when I met up with you. :)

Brown/Green is the early camo, circa Battle of Britain and before. Gray/Green came later (the following year I think) and was used for the rest of the war.

Those are, how do the Brits say... absolutely cracking!

The Spit flypast, the TBM head-on, the Glad pair, the Red Bull F4U-5 with the Sea Fury behind, and the Mustang tail-chase are all fabulous, but the pic of "Snafu" with "Sally B" in the pattern behind her could have come straight out of 1944... hands down my favorite of an incredibly impressive group. Just outstanding stuff, Peter, really. Thanks so much for sharing these with us!

Red Bull's Corsair is a -4. Single chin scoop. Not two cheek scoops as you would see with a -5.
