While waiting for the oil change and annual inspection on my truck this morning, I had the opportunity to catch-up on People magazine. Whoopie. Anyway, it seems Angela Jolie (yes, Mrs. brad Pitt) is in Australia to direct the film version of the biography of Louis Zamperini, Unbroken.

Question. Anyone have any intel as to whether one or both of the current flying B-24's will be utilized in the film or will we be subjected to questionable CG?

Laura Hillenbrand's biography of Zamperini was excellent. It's always a tough assignment to do justice on film to such a fine tome. I truly wish Jolie well.

Neat. I hope the movie stays true to the book.

Only if they do second unit shooting of them in the U.S.. Sounds like it's all be down down under, much like Ghost Soldiers was.

Oh c'mon it's OK to admit you are a faithfull People reader :D

Could be an interesting movie if they do the whole story, not just the "castaway" portion.

Are Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt actually married yet? Inquiring minds want to know!  pop2

Seriously, it will be interesting to see how she does with this one. She is an active pilot, so there's at least some hope that any references to aviation might have a ring of truth to them.

Can't wait to see this one, I need to read that book. On a side note does anyone remember a story, possibly in Air&Space mag, about a P-40 pilot in New Guinea who had an amazing survival story. I think it was from 92-93 time period. He was returning from a mission and sort of day dreaming when he realized he was flying west, away from his base rather than east. Mortified he quickly reversed course but it became obvious he did not have enough fuel to make it. He bailed out over the interior of the island and was found by natives after a few days of wandering around the bush. There is a lot more to the story after this so I'll leave it at that.

I've been searching for it again but unable to find it in their archives. Iirc he was American.

An extended feature on the upcoming film ran during Olympics coverage recently. Not a lot of warbird footage yet (outside of some archival footage and stills), but it did include new interview material with the man himself ...

The director and production staff inspected Witchcraft at Burbank last year. They inquired about flying her to Hawaii. The deal never happened. I had heard they did some sound bites with the LB30.

The reason it's "another" American story is that someone wrote a book about the subject, and someone bought the film rights and they believe they can make money by producing the film. That's it. Lot's of other fascinating stories out there, but they have to get noticed by someone who will put money behind it. Simple economics.
BTW, "Unbroken" is the second book to feature Luois Zamparini's story. One came out a few years ago before "Unbroken" topped the bestseller list.

Don't know when they named Torrance airport for Zamparini, but I learned to fly there and we didn't call it that. O' course that was back in the dark ages :)
