Air wolf filters

We are thinking about putting Air wolf Oil filters on our AC-47. I would like to hear from anyone who uses them on there plane and what they think of them. Thanks, Spookyboss

We have their systems on a Beaver and a 185, and as far as I know, they do a good job. It's easy to change the filters, more so than with the hi-tech one I have on the Focke-Wulf.

Another alternative is the ADC filter with the chip detector. The micron screen type is cleaned and reused. I hear that this type can even be set up with several for the larger engines....

ADC filter.

It does a good job at filtering, I mean, it's very good, but when you split i appart, you leak oil all over the bottom cowlings, as it's mounted on the firewall.

I'll try o dig up a picture of it somewhere.

Ok, I ran by the airport today and got pictures of the filters.

First, the Air Wolf job on one of our Beavers.





ADC Filter on the Focke-Wulf.

Everyone should be using oil filters. The master rod bearing in a radial engine traps and hold the metal wear particles. A filter is a much more elegant and cheaper solution.

There are several other things an oil filter can do. The ADC filters and the Hinz filters that Gerry Beck at Tri-state makes have chip detectors and bypass lights. I am not a big fan of chip detectors because they cry "wolf" alot, but I am a huge fan of bypass lights.

A by-pass light saved the Super-Corsair from an off airport landing when it's engine failed a couple years ago, and a by-pass light would have probably saved the Red Tail P-51 and Don Hinz. Gerry Beck built a filter setup specifically for the P-51 that has a scupper to trap the oil when you clean it out. He named it the Hinz filter.

The chip light in the ADC doesn't come up that much in the Focke-Wulf, probably because we don't do 50 hours a year with it. When the engine was new, it did come up a few times, but it was mainly residues from the overhaul. Nowadays, the screen is always pretty clean.
