Dumb question with a bit of a story,
Last year on Valentines weekend I was sitting in this quaint little spot in Portsmouth, NH with Shannon and my phone rang. Interrupting this really romantic weekend was the voice of our sometimes favorite, sometimes not so favorite Col.
He had asked me about an airplane that was supposedly burried at the airport near my house late in the 40s.
Well, I was talking to an oldtimer at the airport today and he showed me where it is! He couldnt remember what else was burried there but there were others.
Heres my question,
If an airplane was burried in the late 40s in New England would there be anything left of it today?
It was pushed into a gully and then the area was filled in to make the ramp that is there now. Anybody ever dig up something and see how it lasted in the conditions of the Northeastern US?

Talk to Larry Webster. He'll have a good idea of the longevity of buried aluminum in New England.

Soils can differ very much in corrosivity. Under normal circumstances aluminium fairs pretty well in soil but it depends whats in the soil. They can contain salt from old marine sediments, remains from de-icing or dust control salts, nitrates and phosphates from fertilisers and sulphates and nitrates from acid rain, which would increase how corrosive the soil is.

This is too generalized. Soil conditions can be markedly different 100 feet away. The only way to know for sure is to dig!
I have personally seen an aircraft that was buried for 50+ years that was in remarkable condition. Some areas were like new (other than the crushed areas), others were well eaten up- and this was on the same plane.
