would like to cross-reference this with my father-in-laws 2/8 Btn movements ... that Owen gunner looks familiar.

Unfortunately this might be one of the fog of war things; have to admit to being very lucky and spoiled by a couple of annotated behind the lines shots in the AWM archives, but, as the Darwin War Museum guy said '... there were a half-a-million men through here ...' - realistically - the chances of another photo turning up are next to none. Still, would love to see the best possible resolution though, so will add the ref number, etc, to my list.

2/8 was in Aitape early Nov 1944 - AWM states that it was their only campaign in PNG ?

It was involved in the Danmap River operations between December 1944 and February 1945, and then the advance on Wewak and clearance of the Prince Alexander Range between April and July 1945. The capture of the dominating heights of Mount Shiburangu on 27 June was the battalion’s greatest achievement of the campaign.Following the Japanese surrender on 15 August, drafts of 2/8th men began returning to Australia for discharge. The remainder of the battalion departed Wewak on 10 November, and disbanded at Puckapunyal on 14 December 1945.
