A big difference in my view. Most of the Greek and Egyptian stuff has been looted or stolen.........US war material was abandoned.

Cool idea but I've gotta' agree with Dave. Something about salvage rights on abandoned stuff. Same goes with ships at sea. As long as there's someone aboard, it's not considered "abandoned". Once everyone's split, it's considered abandoned and anyone can salvage it and become the new "owner".

foreign greed... sheer foreign country greed. i'm supposed to take my hard earned money.... & my time to organize a recovery... & in alot of respects my time is worth more than my money... find a vintage warbird & have the country where it rests take it from under me?? 
that's total b.s.!! that was originally my country's property. i'll pay the back rent for all the weeds it collected for decades, but don't "f" me because i'm 1 person!! i put more effort toward the effort of recovery as 1 man than your corrupt government did combined!!! shameless opportunism. nobody lays claim to crap until gold is struck under it. almost like the sorry loser relative that everybody hates until he hits the big lottery, & then all the slime balls come oozing from the wood work for a piece of the pie.

i admit it.....i'm a little prone to being long winded long before bake beans god forbid!!! but i was just trying to convey that people with true & sincre interests in preserving aviation history are being hindered by corrupt foreign govt officials because they are trying to cash in on the big yankee dollar. you have to admit..... there have been alot of high profile recoveries from some real big shots these past few years, & some of these 3rd world govt officials are smelling the wiff of the american buck & ratcheting up the prices & stipulations toward completing the projects.

After reading in on this, my question is, According to your definition of "abandoned" wouldn't this apply to all the navy birds that have been dumped overboard. I tried to leave an old Ford in a vacant field but was fined $100 for abandoning it. Just curious.

Does this mean that all of the "war prizes" sitting in US museums can expect to be claimed by their country of origin?

Perhaps thats why the museum of science and industry in Cheecago has the U 505 in an underground exhibit (would like to see the Germans try and dig that thing up and sail it back home) The Ju87 is a differnt matter. Would love to see that taken back to Germany, restored and flown. (it just does not look right hanging from the rafters like a giant model airplane)

Personally I believe that this is a sign of future loss of US sovereignty to the UN. I do not the UN has jurisdiction over us or the right to force legitimately recovered items from Egypt, Greece, or anywhere else to be returned.
In this belief, I would not use it to recover aircraft, it only gives them legitimacy. I think that our government should stand up against this. The only jurisdiction they have is what our government allows them to take.

The Ju-87 used to be on display on its own legs at the EAA Museum when it was at Hales Corners, WI. As I recall, it had the engine sitting next to it with a big flak hole in it from when it had been shot down.ramprat wrote:The Ju87 is a differnt matter.
