The phrase "conspiracy theorist" has become very pejorative, unfortunately. Anyone who has taken the time to seriously study the assassination will have a very difficult time maintaining belief in the "lone gunman" theory as advanced by the Warren Commission. The extent to which LBJ had prior knowledge and/or direct involvement is worthy of reasoned debate. Because of the shadowy nature of his personality, and the facts about the assassination and subsequent cover-up that are slowly coming to light, I personally think it is best for the aircraft to remain where it is.

Sorry Davie, and I know this is off-topic, but what you say above counts as conspiracy theory. LBJ with "prior knowledge and/or direct involvement" is the very definition of conspiracy theory. And the scientists know all about bigfoot and are keeping it secret as well...

Of note, SAM 970 was being used as Air Force 2 in Dallas on Nov 22, 1963. Lots of history with those planes...

I first heard about this during a visit to the NMUSAF last weekend (another visitor told me about it, and said he heard it was pretty much a "done deal.") I didn't bring it up on WIX since all I had was an unsubstantiated rumor. I asked a museum docent about it..he said that the LBJ Library wants it, but there has been massive pushback by a lot of "four stars" who want the aircraft to stay in Dayton. As mentioned above, it's the crown jewel of the NMUSAF Presidential collection, so I can't imagine them letting it go without a massive legal battle.

Local News in Dayton announced this morning that a decision was made to leave SAM 26000 at the AF Museum.

I'm glad 26000 is staying in Dayton. The LBJ Library already has one of LBJ's planes, the Jetstar he used to fly home all the time. That's more of a signature of his presidency than either of the VC-137s.

Very glad this matter is settled positively. It would be extremely disturbing if the aircraft had gone to the LBJ library.

If this deal had somehow gone thru, then every organization out there would be asking for one plane or another.

CAP Flyer

Here is the Jetstar 488, that LBJ used to fly to the ranch. It now is at the Robbins Museum.

If there is one at the LBJ library, I'm not sure what tail number they have painted on it. If I recall,
it may be one of the C-140's we used during Vietnam for flight checking.

If LBJ library wants another plane, I'd be okay with giving them the King Air to display at the ranch...since that's where it was based.

I'm happy it's staying in Dayton....sending it away would have set a bad precedence. Besides, more people will see it the NMUSAF.

Especially when the plane is moved into the new building as part of the main museum campus.

We kept the VC-6 (King Air) in Hangar 6 at Andrews AFB during the Johnson administration. We flew it down to Bergstrom
whenever LBJ was going to be there so he could use it as he wanted while in Texas. Here is a photo we took over the Maryland countryside in 1968
