I was recently sent some photos by a friend who occupied the back seat in the P-40 during a formation training flight last September, before the VWoC airshow. I hadn't really done much formation in 2013, and neither had the Corsair pilot, Francis B, so we had the gloriously good fun of a mutual form training trip.

What's the story behind a Corsair named Joe...?

In short, it was the lone FG-1D to compete in the 1946 Bendix Trophy as Race 90. JOE finished 15th. In 1947, as Race 99 JOE took sixth in the Bendix flew from SoCal to Cleveland in 6 hrs 24 minutes 4 seconds.

Does anyone know the history of Joe "90" before c.1947??

Just found a neat scheme pic of a F4U-1A c.1954 Reg N63382 with a logo of "Chance Vought Aircraft" on the side. (R/S). c. 1954. According to the caption was used by the Co as en executive transport. It looks like a dark Navy blue with white band on the side. The canopy sure looks like the F4U-1 models with the upper bands on top.

Are we talking about the same "Joe" 90/99 or perhaps diff canopies? Has anyone seen other pics/angles of the Chance Vought Civ Corsair?

BTW Jim, thanks for sharing that photo with the tires on the shelves at FOF. I've thought for a while that it would be cool to see the oval-tread tires and/or block-tread tires remanufactured for use on Mustangs today. The block-tread tires I believe were the strongest and were, for instance, the type used on the P-51D-5 which the Navy modified and used for carrier trials in November '44.

my memory card was full and I was being selective about photos. So, no I didn't take many of the exterior. The story goes that it was named "Joe" after it did the Kennedy movie. The Corsair center section is at Maps in Akron-Canton.
