Ahhh!!! that explains it perfectly now!!! the photo I posted looked like China Lake for sure, you come along and flip it the correct way and it's clear it's Davis–Monthan Arizona. Another mystery solved :wink:

Whatever became one of the corroded ocean-recovered F6F that was on display at Pima for years?

For a long time it was their only WWII fighter.

I believe that is the Hellcat pictured on page 1 being recovered in 1970. It was in remarkable condition when recovered, but little was done to stop the corrosion once it made it to the surface. The engine even managed to drop off at some point when the structure failed. There are plenty of pictures of it at Pima during the late 70's looking very sad. Fortunately, the Navy museum in Pensacola took it at some point and had it completely restored. It is on display there now in VF-31 markings.
