List of aircraft on loan from the NMUSAF

Fri Feb 14, 2014 11:24 am

The National Museum of the Air Force maintains a list of aircraft they have on loan by description, AFD-130115-047
The list is categorized by Aircraft Type, Serial Number, Organization, City, State
The list was last updated July 2013.

It is amazing how many they claim to have!. 2164 aircraft on the list!
The link for the list is here:

The AmVets B-17 in Tulare, California is on the list...

The US Army Tank Automotive Command, TACOM, also keeps a list on items loaned out. The list has 4606 items on it from Tanks to bayonets. 250 Huey's are on it and I believe I posted that list. The list can be very inaccurate, things listed that have been gone for 50 years. It seems to be pretty accurate when it comes to M60 tanks. If an American Legion or VFW was loaned a Thompson Submachine 50 years ago still has the gun, it is problematic.

I found it in the B-17 Section of the list.
Kudos to trojandl for finding the list and posting it.

This could lead to hours of fun tracking down some of the display aircraft on Google Earth. I randomly picked the T-33 (51-9100) in Velva, ND and found it in a few seconds (beginner's luck!):

Does the Navy have a similar list? We have three Navy-owned aircraft and several engines on loan to us at VFM. It'd be interesting to see their list if they have one.

Someone's gonna ask, so...
Stinson L-5 Sentinal
Piasecki CH-21B "Flying Banana"
Douglas EA-3B Skywarrior

The NMUSAF really should be deaccessing most of these. There is really no point in the museum having more than 2 or 3 - if that many - of a type.

What stands out to me is that the AMVETS B-17 is the only WWII vintage airframe owned by NMUSAF that is held by a private or non-museum entity, but it is displayed publicly. Not necessarily bad, but a case could be made they lack the resources to properly maintain it, care for its safety or repair. That might constitute a breach of the contract.

A motivated individual or group properly backed could invoke public trust issues to drag the spotlight onto the neglected or damaged aircraft on this list, including the Tulare B-17.

What about this B-29.

Can't see any aircraft at all on Google Earth at that location (or anywhere else in town, for that matter, and no B-29 at the airport north of town). Maybe it was allocated and never delivered? Or taken back at some point? The American Legion Post is in the heart of town on a small street, and all adjoining land is developed. May never have been there at all.

Most of what the Navy has is on loan to the Davey Jones International Navy Museum. :)

I remember a letter posted in Air Classics complaining these aircraft were in bad condition... in 1974. At least they're still around.
