China Lake F4U-4 1951 What colors are used on this aircraft

Fri Feb 21, 2014 2:34 pm

Hi Guys,
Just wondering what the colors are on this F4U-4 testing at China Lake in 1951? Also, can anyone make out all the lettering on the vertical stab?
I'm going to assume Orange Yellow & Sea Blue, but you know what "they" say about assumptions...
...maybe Red Orange?

Thanks!

The tail looks like it reads "NAF NOTS INYOKERN" which would be Naval Air Field, Naval Ordnance Testing Station Inyokern. I don't know about the color but based on the other photos on China Lake's website I think your guess is probably right.

NAF stands for Naval Air Facility & NOTS stands for Naval Ordnance Testing Station.

Educated guess would be orange forward fuselage. That color washes out quickly, and looks too light to be the reddish.

Agreed. Would it be safe to assume from the photo that the center wing section is also orange then end at the wingfold? Wonder if the center-section flaps are orange as well?

There is a color Skyraider picture on that page that is probably the same orange color.
