Going to be in Chicago next week... anything to do?

Wed Jul 21, 2004 9:34 pm

I am heading to Chicago (Palwaukee Airport area) for business on Thursday... anything in the area to perk my interest for an hour or so between meetings? Wish I could head to OSH, but way too far and way too little time for me. Any Chicago area WIXers interested in joining me for dinner at the 94th Aero Sq. Rest at PWK on Thursday night?

MSI has a Spit Mk I too!

25 years ago was the Victory Air Museum in Gilmer (about 30 minutes away) and a T-28 and Hellcat at Chicagoland Airport (10 minutes away)...

Also, that P-47B project is in the Chicago area, but it is probably an hour away (one way).

Scott is pretty close. At the Museum of Science and Industry one can find both the Ju-87 and a rare Mark I Spitfire suspended from the ceiling.

It's too bad you're arriving so late in the week. NATA is holding formation refreshers (for those heading for OSH) this weekend out at the Aurora airport. The T-28 folks are meeting just up the road at Kenosha, WI. I'm afraid not much will be left by Thursday though.

Maybe some of the Chicago-area posters/lurkers will have more ideas for you.

Have a safe flight,

Dan

I understand the Mustangs will be at Kenosha this weekend also.

I thought I heard about the T-6s being at Rockford, Il, but I'm not sure on this one.

The same provisio about most being gone by Thursday would apply to these too.

O'Hare has a Wildcat, but you won't get to see it unless you have a ticket... I'm not aware that they have a Hellcat.

You will need a good flash to get some good pictures of them, All mine came out really bad, I guess I will have to go back :)

Don't forget U-505. That is there also!

Isn't there B-17E (41-2595) being restored in that area also?

Ryan, If I wasnt working the 12 to 8 shift I definately would join you for dinner. As far as the Ju87 and the Spitfire at the Museum of Science and Industry, time would not allow you to get there and back in an hour. As a previous WIXer has stated both planes hang from the ceiling which prevents anyone from getting a real good look at them. At O'hare International Airport they do have a Grumman Wildcat on display but at Midway the SBD doesnt go on display until next month. In Marengo,Il the B-17E is undergoing a slow restoration but the last I heard it is only accessible on weekends. Perhaps the next time you come in we could get together!

Last year I flew into PWK and there was a T-6 in the Hanger. Painted in the navy tri-color scheme.

O'Hare Wildcat

Does anybody know if the Wildcat is still on display at O'Hare? It was not in its original position last August. It looked as if it had been removed to make way for additional X-ray machines and security checks

Yes, the Wildcat is on display. It has been moved to the "airside" of terminal 2 so you now have to pass thru security to see it. That is, if you have a plane ticket.
