Anything to see in Missoula?

Mon Jun 02, 2014 3:09 am

Many years ago, I was a kid, I stopped at the Missoula airport, back then in the waning days of the Johnson Air Service, there was plenty to see. The B-17s and Fords were gone, but I did photograph a DC-2.

I'll be driving past there later this summer. Is there anything to see...and unlike the old days, I have to ask the question...can you get to see them.

The Google earth photo shows a collection of 4-5 Neptunes (and a couple of derelict?) Electras by some hangars off the end of runway 25. A few hundred feet to the east of that, sits another group of Neptunes, these look to be in storage along with a F-27.

Anything else around to see?

The Museum of Mountain Flying has a website at http://www.museummountainflying.org/. It's been a while since I was there, but as I recall most of their display are dealing with civil aviation. The P2V's you mention are used as fire dropping aircraft. At the museum they have a fire dropping TBM. Sorry I can't be of more help, but the website should assist you.

I guess I should have checked the link to the website before sending the previous reply, it seems to be out of date. A phone call might be of assistance. As I recall, Stan Cohen, is a book publisher http://www.pictorialhistoriespublishing.com/index.html I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance. Good luck on your trip.

If you were a local and knew the area, you would have said:

BIG Sky.

John, take a look at Mike Henninger's Aerial Visuals Locator for all the stuff you can see while traveling. http://www.aerialvisuals.ca/Locator.php Looking at Montana, there isn't much there though.

If by chance, anywhere near Great Falls, the Museum at Malmstrom AFB is pretty nice with some outdoor exhibits.

I served there twice in the 50's while it was till Great Falls AFB, and was there the change was made in honor of Col. Malmstrom
