Legitimate Tuskegee Airmen J-3 Cub trainer?

Wed Jun 25, 2014 8:07 pm

I'm on the verge of buying a Piper J-3 Cub that, says its owner, was a Tuskegee Airmen CPT Program trainer and very possibly was the airplane that gave Eleanor Roosevelt her famous ride with Chief Anderson. NC33242 is its number, and it is currently flying.

Does anybody have -any- evidence that this might be true? I've spent to months trying to verify the airplane's provenance via the Smithsonian, the National Park Service, various Piper historians, the FAA, the USAF Historical Center, Chief Anderson's surviving relatives, the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park and a variety of other sources and so far have come up with nothing but he said/she said rumors and stories.

Can anybody lead me to something more solid, like a photograph of the airplane at Tuskegee, Alabama?

Hey Stephan,

I know that we had the original Eleanor Roosevelt J-3 in Geneseo, back in 04 or 05 if I remember correctly. I will see if I have any pics of it, so you may verify. Any one else out there know?!

Austin, that'd be great if you could find anything on it and know for sure that it was the Roosevelt airplane.

How you doin'? How is the P-51 project coming along?

I recall seeing pictures of Eleanor Roosevelt in the plane. Also maybe a newsreel of the flight.
Have you seen those?

Perhaps the ERVK may have some photographs?

Yes, that's a famous photo--actually there are two views, with Eleanor in the "wrong" (back) seat--but neither shows an NC number.
