I'm surprised TIGHAR hasn't gotten into the act.
After all, it's twin engine, twin tailed airplane designed in the 30s.
It might just match the panel they found on the item!!!!

It's surprisingly deteriorated for being in deep fresh water. Note how totally encrusted it is with Zebra Mussels..the warbirds in Lake Michigan are propbably abiut the same. They won't even be recognizable in a few more years.

Its great that it was found, too bad it wasn't something a little more rare. Although C-47's aren't exactly a dime a dozen hopefully someone will recover it because its an AIR FORCE bird and not a NAVY bird.

surely there is something on the bird that could be cleaned up and put back in service.

I'm not sure what the point would be...other than to say..."this part spent years underwater".
There are plenty of abandoned Twin beech littering airports across the country.
A friend was offered one free...it had fresh engines...20 years ago, the owner never collected it after overhaul.
Near me there is one with no engines and belly damage...I'm sure the airport would be glad to see it go.

My question is why did they bail out when they still had a running engine?
